Or you can just change a name to garner more customers.

Of course, but some of these names are very old and it is a shame to see them go. That does not appear to be the case of the pub in Newcastle though.

So, uhm, what's going on with the Twitter of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission?

Is a pub its name though? Wouldn't it be better for a business to have a less off-putting name?

It seems that most of the pubs with that name are being renamed https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-berkshire-56040545 & https://www.gazette-news.co.uk/news/18748980.black-boy-pub-renamed-wake-blm-protests/

I like the idea of renaming them "the Restoration" or "The Cavalier" as this retains the links with Charles II while ditching the problematic name. Of course Sheilbh will probably still be cross, but you can't please everyone.

Kentaro Miura, the creator of Berserk has died:

I found the manga at a comics market in Münster and was blown away by the story and especially the incredibly detailed art. The manga has run for over 30 years, with long breaks in between, and the story will now remain unfinished, I suppose.

(I tried watching the anime versions, but I couldn't get into them.)

One of our Universities, Simon Fraser University (named after the Scottish explorer who "discovered" the Fraser River) named its sports teams the Clansmen or the Clan for short.  Not a problem at all when understood within the context of the university's namesake.  Very much a problem when competing in tournaments in the US.  A couple of years ago the University dropped the name clan.  This historical link was nice but not worth the concern, misunderstanding and distressed it caused to others not familiar with what the name was supposed to reference.

He's a 46 year old corporal.

I've learned that foreign militaries don't have people shoot up the ranks like we do.

RAF rank advancement, among enlisted at least, is waaaaaaaay slower than us in the USAF.

This dude is so one, and I can't even focus the loadout, my guy?

When I served in the 90s, there were some enlisted men who had been with the army for 8+ years and had either no interest in become NCOs or tried and failed. They had a certain reputation for not really having their life together.

Enlisted ranks go from Schütze (or equivalent depending on branch, we guys in the artillery started as Kanonier) to Gefreiter to Obergefreiter (OG) to Hauptgefreiter to Stabsgefreiter to Oberstabsgefreiter. As conscripts you would usually advance to Gefreiter during service, but during my time it was changed so that you would get to reach Obergefreiter (those ranks come with some extra pay but no privileges of rank in any form).

Problem was we had some professional soldiers who had been OG for several year and who were hurriedly advanced by a rank so they weren't on one level with us conscripts doing our 10 months.

I suppose technically I would be an OG a.D. (außer Dienst = retired). :P Though I seem to recall that a few years ago it was decided that anyone who ever served in the Bundeswehr can call themselves "veteran".
