I refuse to live in a non-open plan house. When I am cooking I want to still want to be around the rest of the family. I cannot think of any reason I would want to close off the kitchen/dining area/living room it just works so much better to have all of them together.

I like islands because they can be used for breakfast in the morning.

The second pic might or might not be an open kitchen.  Need to see the reverse angle first.

See I would have called the top pic a galley kitchen - where the counters just run along one wall.
Interesting - in my head, galley kitchen equals narrow space with units on both sides:

QuoteThe second is an open kitchen with an island (obviously the thing in the middle).  As long as there is no wall blocking the kitchen from other living areas it's still an open kitchen.
I'm fairly sure that it's just a kitchen unless one of the units to the right or left opens out into the living room in which case they have a veritable kitchen archipelago :o

QuotePeople may or may not want to start creating separate working spaces, but that has nothing to do with closing the kitchen off from the rest of the living space.
I think people will need it - especially young people who are renting or who have small families. I think unless you're single the ability to close a door is going to be really important. And I wouldn't see it as closing off the kitchen, but I come from a family where the living room is only ever used if we're watching a film or have guests. The kitchen has a TV, everyone sits around the table - easy access to the kettle etc.

Our apartment has a large open room with dining area, kitchen and living room. The kitchen is in the middle and there is a bar on the kitchen "peninsula", which is really the center of the whole thing. I love it, it's very communicative and you can make food preparation part of the social life.

That said, when we started working from home, we were happy that we could squeeze desks in two separations and work from there. You need walls and a door if both work eight hours via Teams....

Yea, this is what I would call a galley kitchen as well.

It is really important but not in the general living space. I don't think many people want all the bedrooms to be open concept.

When I was looking at apartments one of them had a window between the living room and the bedroom.

I wonder if the current Danish childrens' program that's full of naked adults is going to be considered dubious in the future. I'm pretty sure lots of people outside of Denmark consider it dubious right now.
I was curious to find out more about this show, but I think a Google search with "children" and "nudity" just put me on some kind of a list.

You'll want to search for "Danish TV children normal bodies" or some such.

Here are a few links:

John Tiller, whom the grognards will surely know as his 90s engine is still the basis for a myriad of counter-pushing micro-heavy PC wargames, has passed away:

It's insulting. In one of the city centre flat ads here I read "private outside space". Turns out that's the tiny balcony.

Y'all ignored my post but I'm doubling down. https://www.fratantonidesign.com/blog/why-you-should-consider-having-a-second-kitchen

The pictures alone that go along with your article have my even more convinced this is only a trend for the very rich.
