RIP Fred Hellerman, last surviving member of The Weavers.  Today The Weavers are probably better remembered for being blacklisted or having Pete Seeger in the group than anything they sang.  (Thanks to Kurt Cobain hipsters of my generation may know that they sang the anemic hit version of Leadbelly's Goodnight Irene the year after Leadbelly died.)  My parents were folkies, so I listened to them quite a bit as I was growing up.
In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock

We're getting the first proper rain in what feels like months. It's nice. Makes the temperature more reasonable and ensures there won't be loud people on the streets at night so I can sleep with my window open.
I can't wait for the weather machine that perfectly controls weather and ensures it rains at night whilst the days remain fine.

Sex-crazed spiders as big as MICE set to invade homes after lying in wait all summer

I mean, as summer ends, spiders and all kinds of bugs try to make their way in to the house that's pretty standard. Except, I am used to being freaked out over spiders less than half the size of these ones. That's what constitutes a "huge spider" back home.

No Keith Vaz thread yet? http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-37269919

Politicians caught in gay scandals seems so trite these days. Though I do like how he was voice of support to keep poppers out of banned substances as well as judging whether prostitution should be legal.

It's the 50th anniversary of the start of filming for The Prisoner.

Loved that show.  Only three people have seen Gone with the Wind more times than I have seen The Prisoner series.

Now I want to watch it again. Or at least the opening with the cool music.

I lived it these past two decades.

I thought this was clever

Zmiinyi defenders: "Russian warship, go fuck yourself."

Lol, just misses sitting on a bus stop bench all fucking day like a retard.

I got a letter from the bank of my long dead grandmother where they informed me about a change in their general terms & conditions. I wasn't even aware that I am a customer there.  :hmm:

Comb through the T&Cs, there's some money in a dormant account of hers that they're trying to nab, whilst slyly 'informing' you, but not making you aware of the fact.

I wrote them an e-mail and asked them whether there is an account in my name.
