Great White Sharks are coming further North and are now feeding of the Coast of Washington State.  The best explanation seems to be that when ocean mammals in the area were hunted to near extinction the population of sharks dropped but now that the population of ocean mammals is making a come back the shark population is also recovering.   Apparently Orca like snacking on Great Whites and so there is not much risk of having them this far north.

Another way of looking at it is the Orcas are keeping the sharks away from Mono's relatives in BC.

There are a number of communities along the coast that are near ocean mammal populations.  That poses no problems with Orca because they are smart enough not to attack a human by mistake.  But not so much with sharks.
