The European B-Championships are held in Vienna this week:

Who is the favorite?

Fuck if I know. Not Austria.

It's funny how last year I was checking the wild card race like crazy.

But this year I'm checking the division standings like crazy.

They're chugging.  In the AL it's the Royals, Angels, Astros, and I guess the Yankees for now.  Don't see any other teams showing much of a spark.

The Tigers have to have a run in them if Miggy comes back soon and they don't sell off all of their starting pitching.

In other racism news, ESPN fired Colin Cowherd after a remark about Dominican players:

QuoteCowherd came under fire Thursday when discussing the complexity of the game of baseball.

"Like I've never bought into that, 'Baseball's just too complex,'" Cowherd said, according to the New York Times' Richard Sandomir. "Really? A third of the sport is from the Dominican Republic."

Cowherd is a blowhard, but it isn't necessarily racist to say/imply that people from third world countries with crappy education systems are disproportionately stupid.
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

There's a fine line between salvation and drinking poison in the jungle.

I'm embarrassed. I've been making the mistake of associating with you. It won't happen again. :)

The article made little sense to me until, buried right near the end...

QuoteCowherd was already set to leave ESPN when his contract expired next Friday, per Sports Business Journal's John Ourand, but Thursday's comments accelerated his departure timetable.

What a brave stand for ESPN to take - firing a host who had already quit.

The younger talent from D.R. ought to at least have their brains finely tuned for baseball by now.  I believe most of these guys are the product of all the baseball academies set up in the country a few years ago, where they eat, sleep & breathe baseball (and hopefully learn English along the way).

The Minsky Moment

Pedro was one of the most baseball smart players I ever saw.

Of course on the flip side is Manny.

Maybe the lesson is that categorizing by race is really really really dumb?
The purpose of studying economics is not to acquire a set of ready-made answers to economic questions, but to learn how to avoid being deceived by economists.

It would be. But he did not mention a race, but a nationality. I presume it was a joke that he was not actually categorizing people by nationality.

It appears that the Tribe has gone full on 2011 Red Sox under Tito this year without having had the benefit of winning two World Series first. <_<

Well that was a hell of a home run by the Cards.  Is Speiss at that game?
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011
