So has anyone checked out the end-of-beta event?

Apparently there are Klingons and Borg cobes all over the Federation, generally WTFPWNing any fed cruisers nearby.

Logged in for the last 30 minutes or so.

As mentioned, there were Borg Deep Space Encounters all over the place.  Brutal.

Klingons could fly anywhere in Federation space.  I alt-tabbed out just outside of spacedock, came back and some BOP was trying to fry me.  I came back in time, and although I died I weakened him for other Feddies to finish him off.

Then I went to Risa, where a bunch of people were standing around dancing and shooting the shit.  Klingons could also beam down, and while initially they were kill on sight, the last 5 minutes they could not, so Klingons and Federation could party together.

Mildly amusing.  :)

Definitely cured of any temptation to sign up for a lifetime subscription:

175 EUR +20% Austrian VAT = 210 EUR.

Gah!

If it's any consolation my buying the lifetime is definitely a triumph of hope over experience.

It's the obligation of the seller to collect sales tax.  Besides since Cryptic doesn't maintain a physical business in Canada, I doubt they are required to.

But if you had bought a box, it would go thru customs & you would be charged taxes. Electronic goods are magically excluded?

I believe so, yes.

But if I ever have to prosecute a tax file, I always call up the CRA people and go "help!", so don't take me as a definitive authority.

Believe me, VAT laws and electronic business is a bit confusing occasionally. Some EU online shops have their prices always the same, including their (local?) VAT, e.g. GG, AGEOD or D2D UK. Matrix (or their distributor in UK who would also send hardcopies within EU), on the other hand, adds VAT for the buyer's country. So does Cryptic to their subscription fees (at least lifetime and annual). U.S. shops usually don't charge VAT, but I wouldn't swear they've never charged me (European) VAT.
