Quote from: Barrister on January 24, 2010, 11:18:46 PMIt's possible I might not get my money's worth out of a lifetime subscription.

Depends on how you look at it. I don't look at how long the subscription period would be for that price (roughly two years, I think), but rather at how many other games I could buy for that money and if I would spend as much time with STO as I might with them (and knowing how I have paid full price for some games I didn't spend more than 10 hours with, that threshld is not too high).

I'm leaning towards going lifetime as well, I just need to look and see how much I have spent on WoW, City of heroes, and Lotro to see it makes sense for me to buy a lifetime. Even more so when factoring in my Trek :nerd:

How would pre-ordering the game three times count in that equation?

I kept my composure and only ordered it twice!

But as it stands I will have payed $140 for all the pre-order bonuses i wanted get 60 days of "free" game time and then have paid the once time fee of $240 for grand total of $380.
Considering I spent about double that in WoW fees for 4 years time I'll be content if game is still around in similar time frame.

*serious now*

So you bought it twice for $70?  What is the "one time fee of $240"?  Is that the lifetime subscription?

EDIT:  No longer tainted. :yeah:

Well, I got some mileage out of SWG, then later out of WoW which I played a couple months. I tried others (Vanguard, Conan, EVE) which I didn't like. Champions was not worth my investment. I still return to LotRO now and then (one day I'll crack level 30 :P ). I like the exploration aspect of MMORPGs a fair bit, and also a chance to hang back and just do some crafting or socializing.

STO seems geared a lot more towards instant action (though what I see of it I like), so I doubt at this point that I will stay with it beyond my "free" month, even though what I've seen so far is fun. But I think a Star Trek game should be about more than PWNIGN the opposition.

Star Wars: The Old Republic seems to be more up my alley (or so I hope), but as that one's still over a year away I can't say, really.

See i'm liking the game because i can log in and do just a few quests here and there, some discovery, others are resolve disputes and don't feel need to be blasting away. And except for a few toughies I can do them on my own time if my friends aren't available to play.

$60 for the Digital Deluxe and $80 with shipping for the Collectors hard copy edition. And yeah the discounted lifetime subscription is $240 till Feb 1st, after that it will be $299 and won't come with the "perks" of playable borg (meh) and extra character slots.

The apparent soloability of the game, however, is a drawing point for me. It's a bit of a conundrum here.

Just had a very very long ground combat mission PvE as my klingon. Only in the end was the team working together enough to plough trough the endless starfleet spawns. It is however the only easy way to get ground loot as a klingon I found till date so a well. It did show me the potential of a starfleet engineer (man they are annoying).

I think ill start an engineer starfleet friday, switch to klingon at level 6 and when the game goes live start enjoying quest with my joined trill as a tactical or engineering officer.

That's what appeals about it to me.  It seems that I can log in knowing I have one hour to play, finish a mission (that is generally timed to last about that long) and have a satisfying game experience.  :)

As said, I see how this is a plus, but I'm not sure how long it will make the game last for me.

This is what draws me to the game as well.  Sit down, play for a half hour or so and have some fun.

And I thought I was slow... :p

anyways: if you're not in a kin and need a laid back one: look up the true taters. They're quite large and cater to kinnies both high and low.

So trying to decide between rolling a joined trill (extra slot over any other toon), liberated borg (their bonus sounds cool, plus it's 'exclusive'), or saying screw the extra bonuses.

Pretty sure I'm going to go science officer on a science ship.  Keep things straight forward.

And I can start to see what you'll waste your time on once you hit max level: bridge officers.  Trying to maximize their skill sets, learn rare new skills, get separate officers for bridge duty and away missions...

I'm sad; tomorrow, I wave bye-bye to my Benzite, and since I have exactly $7.50 to my name at the moment, it seems as though it'll be some time before I can recreate him. :(

PS - sell the freaking batteries.  You respawn a bit, but as soon as I took on a policy of selling all the useless loot, I got myself both a cruiser and an escort in a couple of hours.
Experience bij!

Kat - game crash on you too?

And I agree Carrot - sell, sell, and sell more stuff.

Apparently as useful as the replicator is, you supposedly get much better prices back a starbase.  And, as I found, since you can't sell stuff while on an away mission...
