I don't think the Bloc has produce any ads yet.

The Bloc kind of sells itself anyway.

True but this year since the Cons is drumming the Region vs Montreal line. It'll have to atleast address that.

Speaking of attack ads. The Vancouver Sun site has collected the attack ads the parties are using so far during the election.  The Cons, NDP and Greens each have one.  The Liberals have three so far.  Like I told you Jacob, nobodies hands are clean on this one.

Btw, I am assuming the Bloc attack ads are not up because they are in French.
Christ, the Green woman was annoying.

I do like the fact that the Tory ads remind me that a vote for the Liberal Party is a vote for Ignatief. Thanks, guys, I know who the leaders of ALL the major parties are, but I appreciate the reminder-- my brother thought it was a vote for John Turner. This ad set him straight.

My guess is the Party is running ahead of the Leader.

Of course nobody's hands are clean

In the big scheme of things, the Conservative early campaign ads are no big deal at all. I just found them annoying because they were early and everpresent and because I found the particular line of attack obnoxious.

Attack the Liberals on their old corruption, on not being any different than the Conservatives in substance, on not being in tune with the needs of the West and on scheming to pull of the coalition and so on; fair enough.

Attack the Conservatives on their semi-hidden reactionary agenda and dodgy backbenchers, on Harper's powermongering and disrespect for parliament, of not being in tune with the concerns of the cities and immigrants and everyone except Albertans, on being a hypocrite regarding the coalition and so on; equally fair

Attack the NDP on all the same stuff they're always attacked on (not serious and crazy socialists!).

It was just the timing and tone of this one particular ad that I thought counterproductive; evidently I was not the target audience.

That's the thing with political ads, but attack ads in particular, they might work well for the target audience but be counterproductive with those outside of it. As Ignatieff said, 20% of Canadians were born outside the country, 2 million work outside of it; many more support a fairly inclusive view of the country. Harper's initial ad drew some lines that may not be that good to draw if he intends to aim for a majority and represent most Canadians.

Heh, if the Green party ad is to be believed, we should not vote for the cons because they are bad lays and remind one of one's abusive, geeky boyfriends. Or at least, says the oddly-gesticulating woman in the ad.

Well, if the target audience for a political ad *was* non-voting non-citizens, I'd want to have a few words with the campaign manager ... :D

But yeah, those ads sucked hard.

I don't understand why they chose to have someone doing a spoken word performance.

Nobody is trying to aim to represent "most" Canadians.  The Libs and Cons are trying to obtain the percentage of the vote - which falls well below 50%, which would give them a majority of seats. Obtaining 50% or more is impossible under current circumstances.  The Block would have to disappear as an option in Quebec and even then garnering 50% of voter support would be very difficult.

The last time it was done was in 1984 for the Mulroney Conservatives.  The time before that was in 1958 by the Conservatives.

The attack ads try to paint Iggy as an elitist who just came to Canada to take up his rightful position as Leader of the Liberal Party (remember it was not so long ago they referred to themselves as the "natural" governing party of Canada).  Those sorts of references still resonate with a lot of voters who continue to be upset with Liberal arrogance and corruption and to that extent the adds work quite well.

Also I couldn't watch the ad as every so often an advertisement for something random would start playing over it and the ad screen would go black. :(

Hey can I ask you a question? What's this "add" bit? I never seen it written like that before.
