We are betting everything on Europe defending Ukraine, but half of the people in Western Europe, where all the money actually is, wouldn't fight to defend themselves.
Until there's an actual invasion such polls mean little though.

I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

You don't need everyone to fight. I don't think it would be useful to have half the adult population in the armed forces. Swedes are more willing to defend their country than Americans are, and a lot more than Russians. I think it will do.
Women want me. Men want to be with me.

Razgovory

If they are less likely to fight, then they are less likely they are to want to pay for the means to fight.

I think it's just part of the 'We're' pulling out of Europe, but you lot are pathetic and can't/won't defend yourselves' narrative.

So sort of a 'We're still awesome and you're crap' displacement thinking/sentiment to take your mind of of just how terrible America could get under Trump.

You can only 20% to 25% of your population in the military at maximum anyway. And that is in a WWII total war type scenario. Those percentages will suffice.

Italy is the most bizarre country politically I have ever seen. It's so incoherent. Every country is weird, especially mine, but they just seem more so.

The US manages to pay, with even lower will to defend the country. I'm not worried.

At its peak in early 1945 the US had mobilized just less than 9% of its population.  The UK's peak was 1918, at just over 11%.  The USSR peaked at about 18% and Nazi Germany at about 22% (hard to say for sure because what counts as a German changed over the course of the war). Those numbers appear achievable even in the face of this poll.

That's not what the poll says.

They didn't ask if they would fight to defend their country.  They asked if they would fight in a war involving their country.

Kinda like half the Americans who voted for a guy who promised to not get involved in foreign wars, you know.  Or maybe there was something else appealing in his discourse?

I don't know, it seems a lot of Americans are overjoyed at the idea of not spending to defend Europe, despite their treaties.  You included.

Would you be willing to take arms and fight in a war involving your country?  Will you fight to invade Canada?  Greenland? Mexico?  The Dominican Republic?  Will you sign up to quell the domestic disturbance when the police isn't enough?  Shoot some trans? Some other Democrats?  Could be a way to keep your social security and your healthcare insurance you know.

Reports that Trump expects territorial concessions and Zelensky resigning. Plus of course raw materials. Not sure what's in it for Ukraine in that great deal of his.

It is very bad for America and we will rue this day.

Because if the Europeans re-arm and build this big military industrial complex with a well funded and powerful professional army...well...they are eventually going to use to advance their interests. Interests that may not align with ours.
