I hope they all come to Canada

This is going to come across as a bit racist, but fuck it.

Every Ukrainian immigrant I've known has been fabulous.

I have nothing against Somalis (to pick one example) coming to Canada, but they do generate a lot of my files.  Understandable given the shitshow of that country.

But we should take every Ukrainian we can get.

Not just a bit.

Why couldn't you have said you welcome them, without having to say you prefer them over people with Brown skin?

Quote from: Josquius on Today at 11:43:08 AMI guess its a sign of the terminally online nature of his government?
They're obsessed with things that are a big deal to cyber-fascists with their diet of strategy games but have zero connection with reality

Yeah it seems like this could be a contributing factor.

Quote from: Syt on March 05, 2025, 03:49:38 PMSpeech of Sen. Claude Malhuret in French parliament. Unfortunately the only English subbed version of his speech I found.

Incidentally, he's the former mayor of Vichy...

It's like at the end of Casablanca Captain Renault walks away from Rick and drinks his Vichy water instead of throwing it in the trash.

I mentioned it then removed it, knowing that it could derail the thread.  :goodboy:
He also had a dumb / ignorant leftist phase about the Cambodian genocide which led him later to recognise he had it all wrong. Giving up marxism in 1977, after his stay in Thailand in 1976-1977 as part of his NGO work.

Sénateur for the Allier département, which includes the sous-préfecture of Vichy.  :P

I respect people who can learn from their mistakes.

Am I correct in remembering that he was the head of MSF / Doctors Without Borders at some point?

Yes, following his stay in Thailand as a doctor for Cambodian, Laotian and Vietnamese refugees.

Kouchner was not too happy about Malhuret becoming head of MSF.

We could grand asylum to some.  It needs to be a coordinated move with Europe to grant asylum to all this people.

We are stretching our limits.

I could envision a temporary asylum until some of them are relocated to Europe, since it's an emergency and they risk being deported to Russia.

Never met an Ukrainian immigrant IRL.

Also never met a Somali immigrant IRL.

I'm pretty sure I could notice the difference between the two though... :hmm: :P

My best analyst is a Ukrainian immigrant... recruited her right out of college after she interned for me.  Despite being part of a generation everyone thinks is lazy and indulgent, she works her ass off and is a very talented developer.

We have two Ukrainians in our office, one in my team. Great colleagues, wouldn't want to miss them.
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

I swim with a Ukrainian. Great guy, but he did not like the pink goggles I lent him for a while.
