I'm working class. Though an argument for middle class can be made given I've been in decent work for a decade now.
But if I'm upper class then boy do they have a low bar these days.
That's just silly.

Doing the rounds but fascinating map of housing built before 1919 in France:

Can see some broader trends - Greater Paris, Toulouse, the West and the Alps. But also the First World War front line really marked out (I suspect Normandy landing knowers would spot similar historic marks (I can see Le Havre, for example).

I'm guessing the west coast is from population growth?

Toulouse is another good obvious example of this, the growth of airbus/aerospace means lots of new built housing.

The line in the north east stands out very strongly.

Curious the west coast is so new too.

Port areas were destroyed during WWII with Festungen or bombings. The whole coast, however, is due to tourism.

Randomly seen online somebody crunched eurostat data to come up with a true list(s) of Europe's biggest cities.

Interesting to see Newcastle is in the top 50 there. And Leeds lack of a tram looks even more ridiculous .

The First World War front line is amazingly striking.

But obviously the greater trend seems to me the poorer the region the more old buildings they will have around, which I guess is probably true everywhere. But this is only an impression.

I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Dispite josquis' views I think France also has some wacky house laws that make renovations and teardowns very difficult*. So if it wasn't blown up during the war(s) you've got a lot of old stock housing.

Yeah - as Duque says with all of the coast this is post-1919 so you've also got the Popular Front and paid holidays and the establishment of the month long conge paye. So I suspect that's definitely part of it as seaside resorts are established and grow through the inter-war and then post-war.

A lot is urbanisation in general - and I supect the post-war metropolisation. You can really see Greater Paris around a very small, older Paris but also, say, Toulouse. I think the West has grown a lot more and been a bit of a hub in the last few decades though - I want to say maybe since the 90s?
