Yeah scary stuff. The device detonated and caused property damage but thankfully nobody was injured.

Anyone claim credit yet?

Quote from: crazy canuck on June 27, 2025, 07:03:07 AMC-5 is now law.  Now let's see if the private sector moves gets projects going.

edit, also reports that Carney has given notice to senior civil servants that if they do not take action to implement the governments agenda, they will be replaced  with people who will.  As a side note, the senior ranks serve at the pleasure of cabinet, so they can be replaced.

Word on the radio is that we will soon see a list of projects of national importance released, and out of those, the ones reaching consensus quickest (least first nation push back?) will get shovels in the ground quickly.

From perspective of stimulus to avoid recession, speed getting money out and workers employed is most important.

So basically I expect the no brainer like power lines, railways, port investments first, the more contentious projects like pipelines to come later.  But let's see... interesting times.

Carney blinks; rescinding the Digital Tax

Yeah, I get to keep my job.  So happy.  I guess.

I suppose it was the only move Canada could do for now.

Don't like it one bit though.

As an aside, I had read that it was retroactive to 2022. Which seems odd. Is/was that wrong or is that normal for things like this to work retroactively?

It's not right or wrong. It is unusual. And would likely have been subject to a court challenge if not repealed.  Retroactive taxation, like all retroactive laws, face significant judicial scrutiny.

Meh... It was a bad time to bring in this tax, bigger fish to fry.  Apparently people were predicting back in Biden administration it would trigger a trade war.

I'm assuming this tax wants the tech giants to pay their fair share...Eventually some future US administration will do that and then we can harmonize...

crazy canuck

Yeah, the intention initially was to have a harmonized tax, but the Americans bailed.

The War of 1912 has largely been forgotten by history.

Anyway congrats on peacefully negotiating your self government and confederation back in 1867 Canadians.
