Quote from: Razgovory on June 26, 2025, 02:00:44 PMOkay, so the job search isn't going that well.  I'm using indeed to search for jobs, and sending out a resume, but I need to write something about why I have a quarter century gap in my employment history.  I don't think posting on Languish is good excuse and I already tried the old imprisoned-inside-a-cosmic-egg thing.

Have you applied at grocery stores?  Around here the collecting carts job seems to go to people with disabilities.
Yep.  Haven't heard anything back yet.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Yeah it may be worth searching to see if there are any social enterprises in your area. I know a few around where I am that basically are there to employ people who are trying to get into work but have with long gaps for whatever reason.

Don't discuss Israel during any interviews. :P

Have you checked Missouri social services to see if they have any placement thing?

Explain the gap with "those who know don't say; those who say don't know."

Re: the gap, I'd probably try to frame it around taking care of your mother (unless I misremember the details of your situation).

You may also get something out of typing up the kind of things you did when taking care of her (with notes about her specifics) and asking ChatGPT (or some other AI) to turn it into "job skills".

Admiral Yi

Eck, I wouldn't try to game the gap.  I'm nuts, taking meds, now I'm desperate.

Sage advice.

I agree with that approach.  Too much transparent gaming just pisses people off, you can't fill 25 years of employment gap with some fancy description of shoveling neighbor's snow out of a driveway.  They're just going to make assumptions anyway.  Being candid may inspire a small percentage of employers to do a good deed and be open-minded.

I think it's good advice to try placement agencies or other services.  Is 25 year gap accurate?  I don't know details of your life but don't be afraid to use a social worker, my wife used to be a social worker and trust me they know how to work the system and get the resources working for you.

My kids have been using Duolingo to learn English.

Today, my eldest reaches a 1000 days streak and the end of that road. Almost 20% of her life.

My youngest will also end his streak today at 802, 18% of his life.

Quebec should consider some full time English immersion schools :P

Duolingo is in constant enshitification nowadays. Update to courses are now frequently AI made and I can't trust that without verification and I'm not willing to do that. They also have been losing motivation for quite a while. They seem to have reached the end of what the free version can offer them. It was a great tool to accumulate vocabulary, it's time for them to start hearing conversations, imo. Shows, movies and music offer that better than Duolingo.

@HVC 😆 my kids aren't allowed to go to public school in english.

Yeah I don't think the good people of Quebec lack opportunities to immerse themselves in English.
