Quote from: crazy canuck on June 09, 2025, 04:31:36 PMOk we have a bit more detail of what the additional spending looks like

$2.6-billion to accelerate recruitment and help retain Armed Forces personnel as well as invest in the civilian work force who support the military.

$844-million to repair and upgrade existing Forces infrastructure and critical equipment in both maritime and aerospace.

$544-million to strengthen the Department of National Defence and the Armed Forces' protection against cyber threats and secure networks. It includes funding for Communications Security Establishment Canada as well.

$1-billion will be allocated to make the military more self-sufficient in defending Canadian territory and citizens, particularly in the Arctic.

$4.1-billion to start to create a made at home military production industry, no more just buying stuff from the Americans.
I have the confirmation here that 14 billion$ (already planned for 2024-2025) from the coast guard budget will count toward defense expenditures to achieve the 2% NATO target.

Look for Dimitri Soudas segment where he provides the explanation and use the English translation. :)

Edit:
Thanks for the breakdown in numbers.  Very helpful. :)

Don't know how we're going to pay for all that by cutting taxes.

GST has should be increased.

Or we keep tariffs on everything imported from the US, while Canadians keep buying like crazy maniacs from Amazon and Wal Mart while nothing changes from them.

Bauer

Wait we have to pay for it?

But in all seriousness a gst increase wouldn't be so bad if it's directly linked to the military budget.  It would be nice to have some taxes accounted for in key expenditure buckets.

More made in Canada makes sense,  if we're investing more we have to have benefits at home.  Better salaries should have indirect benefits at home in addition to recruitment problems.

Bauer

So apparently some of the coast guard budget has always been counted, where they were deemed doing defence jobs.  But sounds like a major mandate change to the coast guard has been done.  Coastal patrol responsibilities?

Not sure yet.

Our coast guards are not armed and only a few ships have .50 cal machine gun.

I doubt the Trudeau govt decided to armed to current ships in production.

I'm curious how much Russia is dealing with similar forest fires. You (well I) don't hear much about it though I presume they're in a similar position to Canada.

I guess they have (ahem) bigger fires to fight?

Now that you raise it, yeah they must be having the problem on a much larger scale - without the resources to do much about it.

Earlier this spring Siberia was burning extensively and they had nothing to fight the fires with.

There's been a smell of smoke earlier this week, and the sun was reddish, with a taint of smoke in the sky.

It's strange, to my knowledge, there's no huge forest fire in Quebec or Northern Ontario?

We're getting smoke too, but i think it's from the west. Not as bad as last time though.

This year, around here, yes.
But apparently, we are under heightened risk of forest fire.

Back in... 2020, there was a huge forest/peat most fire a few km away around this time of the year.

Libs are going to used cloture to pass their bill.

Carney is violating his first promise, 2 minutes after being elected.

He promised he wouldn't pass a pipeline, or try to pass any kind of critical infrastructure project without First Nation of provincial consent, and up in smoke it is with this huge bill.

The Bloc Québécois proposed a viable alternative: split the bill in two, once for inter-provincial commerce, one for the energy infrastructures.  The inter-provincial commerce bill could have been approved withing two weeks, the other one could have been carefully studied and amended to clarify what makes it wrong.

NDP will vote against.  I guess the Cons will vote for.  Centralizing federalism à la Trudeau it is.
