It was covered quite extensively here in the UK and we were repeatedly reminded about how Canada is one of our best friends, standing shoulder-to-shoulder in WW1 and WW2 and not turning up halfway through the show like some others  ;)

I do belive this sort of stuff is very important, though it is hard to quantify.

Here the Crown is an essential part of our constitutional fabric.  And it is useful to remind people, and now especially Trump, of that fact from time to time.

Quote from: crazy canuck on May 28, 2025, 07:20:01 AMYeah, the fact Carney could arrange the King's speech so quickly is remarkable and is indicative of the speed he is moving.

The cynic in me would suggest that it was indicative that Mark Carney is the former Governor of the Bank of England and has lots of connections in London.

I'm pro-monarchy so I have no problem with King Chuck delivering the Speech from the Throne, but lets cool our jets a little bit about the symbolism of it.
Posts here are my own private opinions.  I do not speak for my employer.

Sean Carney, Mark's brother, is COO of the Household of the Prince and Princess of Wales.

I couldn't help but notice Stephen Harper and Justin Trudeau sitting next to each other and being so chummy. After a decade of Trump it was kind of jarring to see comraderie like that between former opponents.

I don't think that is cynical, that is what happens when we elect someone with Carney's credentials and experience.

Quote from: Valmy on May 28, 2025, 12:45:05 AMWait the King of Canada himself delivered the Throne Speech? Huh. I was not aware that that is something that could happen.

Well good for Charles.

He threw some French in there too :D

Seems like all fun and games until someone gets hurt with a chevauchee through Gascony . . .
We have, accordingly, always had plenty of excellent lawyers, though we often had to do without even tolerable administrators, and seen destined to endure the inconvenience of hereafter doing without any constructive statesmen at all.

Some of the New(tm) Conservatives are losing their mind over the King's delivery of the Throne's speech.

Monarchy might be finally waning in this country after all.

No HVC, it won't be enough for me to stomach the Newbreed Cons again.  :P   I ain't voting for King Poilièvre.

What was wrong with his delivery?  Seemed to have more cognitive capacity than Biden or Trump.

HVC

For the antimonarchist being King is enough, for some conservatives that fact that the thrones speech was for a liberal is enough

What HVC said.

Whoever reads it, it's still written by the government team.  King Charles didn't write himself on the plane.

For my part, I skipped the tv news for 2 days.  Fuck, they showed a plane on tv for 2 days straight, then the King holding some piece of paper written by someone else for which he had zero input and they were all ecstatic about it like Team Canada had just won the Men's hockey gold medal again.

I'm off with cable and land line next week. 1200$ more in my pockets each year.

I thought Carney was more of an upstart born in NWT, son of a high school principal.  Didn't expect a family connection like that.
