Yeah well it was close. Anyway I was white knuckled hoping for a miracle so hardly an objective cool minded judge. So we lost and now everything is fucked. So fuck me, my country, and everything else.

Quote from: Razgovory on May 16, 2025, 10:38:29 AMIf a sitting President faces a serious primary challenge then he is probably going to lose the general election though.

Yeah well he shouldn't have run. And he all but promised he wouldn't during his win in 2020 so it is not like him not running would have reflected badly on him.

Trouble is the GOP have huge wolf crying energy.
If they say something then you can be sure 9 times out of 10 the opposite is true.
Biden being so far gone was the one time they were right.

They weren't alone in that at all. Tons of people were expressing concern about Biden's age. That was not some right wing conspiracy theory.

The GOP thing they are doing is advancing that while ignoring Trump being basically the same age.

I'm obviously not representative of Americans but it was only  from hysterical trumpies online that I heard it.

I wonder if there was something intentional in this, poisoning talking about the topic to force the dems to defend Biden?

Quote from: Valmy on May 15, 2025, 08:09:24 PMA full and open Primary was necessary. I knew it then and it is obvious now.
Has there ever been a primary with the President still intending to be re-elected?

Yes since 1900 there have been three serious primary challenges against a sitting president; 1912 (Taft-Roosevelt), 1976 (Ford-Reagan) and 1980 (Carter-Kennedy).  In all three cases the sitting president won the primary but lost the general election (to Wilson, Carter and Reagan respectively.)  This is a significant reason why Biden didn't face a serious challenger.
In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock

Well, you are one of major reasons I even want to stay to banter. :elvis:

Also 1980 and 1968.  Before that I'm a little hazy, the way primaries worked was different prior to the 1960's.  Still, Hoover lost several primaries in 1932, so having a primary for the sitting president seems like a death knell.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Yeah that's part of what was so bad about it.  Being proven right once emboldens all the other shit.

Also bluntly the power and politics plays a role.

I remember reading a piece about Dianne Feinstein - and it basically sounded like the group of thirty-something aides around her basically were the Senator. It was kind of gross to be honest.

And I suspect for the parties it's not the worst thing. Actually functioning legislators might have an independent thought at some point - while I suspect a hivemind of congressional aides are fairly reliable/predictable (I can't help but imagine that donors and lobbyists also know this...)

I predicted a Harris win with over 300 EV and +10 million votes differential.

It seems my trust in the yanks' common sense was, once more, misplaced.

It could also be paying more attention to what you want to be true, and less attention to what you don't want to be true.  I always had a lot more enthusiasm to watch videos of Ukrainian drones dropping grenades on Russian troops than I did to watch the videos of Russian drones dropping grenades on Ukrainian troops.  As a result I was very confident that the counter-offensive of 2023 would crush the Russians.

Hey, water under the bridge.

You're a fellow Languishite, we've all had a bit too much fun once in a while. Once I woke after a languishmeet, a Erasmus gal on my left and a leaking hotel bathroom to the right.

I woke up early because I noticed a snuff box on the night stand from Sheilbh, that's how I made my flight in the end. It was great, RH told me to drink plenty of tea the day after. It all was great.
