What does a TRUMP presidency look like?

Look, I really don't know how the border in the south of the US is, how porous it is, how many who come illegally, but as a country, a nation, built on immigrants in waves for 200 years, it just seems somewhat un-American to deport people en masse.

Not that countries like Norway don't deport those whose claims for asylum are found to be wanting, and even deport people who've lived here for years because there was a white lie on their application.

Supposedly these are ad-hoc decisions the parents have to make in a super stressful situation without chance to contact legal assistance or their social circles to possibly find other solutions. Hardly due process.

If you are innocent and have nothing to hide and are deferential to the police and ICE, you will not be arrested and don't need due process. Only criminals insist on due process! :P

I think that you are trying too hard to rationalize his statement. If you start with the assumption that he is lying, it is much easier to comprehend his statements.

Find an old "Liar's Club" skit from Saturday Night Live and you will see how closely they predicted Trump's behavior.

Quote from: Valmy on April 14, 2025, 11:57:14 AMI continue to hear how there is chaos at American ports and the tariffs are not even being collected.  :bleeding:
I think the British needed years (or maybe they still did not implement?) to have phytosanotary checks for EU imports after Brexit.
I don't think those checks are happening (personally I don't think we really need them at all for imports from the EU but that's another issue).

But even just on charging our own tariffs and setting up the customs infrastructure for the UK v as part of the EU single market took about five years. That didn't actually involve many changes (most trade deals were rolled over) and certainly not having to check social media to discern the latest rates.

Not abandoning your child is not an ad-hoc decision what is wrong with you.

That's the point: parents will not abandon their children and the tactics of ICE do not seem to give them the chance to arrange a caretaker or whatever, so abandonment or joined deportation are the only options. But giving the child into care might be something parents would be willing to do for their child with cancer if that means the child has a higher chance to survive.

Quote from: Zanza on April 26, 2025, 12:52:14 AMBizarre that they deport children that are citizens. Deporting a child cancer patient is cartoonish villainy.

Less bizarre if deported parents are asked if they want their children to accompany them.

The father said no, the mother was not given access to to counsel and thus there is no way to verify what she was told or what she said.

Either way this is not an appropriate use of limited enforcement resources. On the list of potentially deportable aliens, this family should be near the bottom of the priority list.

Me? No that is for other Americans.

I think that result makes sense.

America the nation would probably be better off if it built more of certain things (e.g. ships, microchips). That doesn't mean factory work is the best work for most individuals.

Manufacturing in the US accounts for about 10% of total employment, so 22% expressing interest in switching to such employment is not that low.

Paired with the earlier anti-Sanctuary City/State EO and Stephen Miller's comments about Pritzker, it could be a very, very bad Summer. One to make 2020 look like the Summer of Love...
