Subaru to move manufacturing out of the US in response to US tariffs:

QuotePresident Donald Trump's tariffs just cost America a chunk of Canadian business.

Subaru, which sold 68,043 cars in Canada in 2024, is reshuffling its supply chain in response to escalating car trade scuffles.

The company sold over 17,700 American-built vehicles in Canada last year, making up 26 percent of its 2024 sales.

But the Japanese automaker's Canadian division will slash US imports to just 10 percent by the 2026 model year, representing thousands of cars and millions of dollars lost.

The biggest impact will be on the American-built Outback. The popular car will no longer ship north after 2026.

Instead, it will feature a 'made in Japan' badge.

Subaru Canada's CEO, Tomohiro Kubota, said the move will 'minimize the impact of the counter surtax,' according to Automotive News Canada.

For Subaru, it's cheaper to build and ship cars out of Japan than deal with the political whiplash of US trade policy.

So Trump has apparently said he's already negotiated 200 trade deals, but won't disclose with whom.

Not that I expect it to be topical for quite a while, but what is the process for declaring a sitting president mentally incompetent?

I dunno when we try to contact the administration over the tariffs it's pretty much this.

Overall state capacity seems minimal at the moment. :hmm:

Btw, how have the first few shifts gone in the toaster factory? ;)

It involves Congresscritters, who refuse to do their job right now for various reasons.

Admiral Yi

"Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President."

25th Amendment

Jacob

So VP + majority of Secretaries of [whatever] can do it?

Baron von Schtinkenbutt

Temporarily.  Longer-term requires Congressional intervention:

QuoteThereafter, when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue, assembling within forty-eight hours for that purpose if not in session. If the Congress, within twenty-one days after receipt of the latter written declaration, or, if Congress is not in session, within twenty-one days after Congress is required to assemble, determines by two-thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office.

So, if they 25th Trump all he has to do is send a letter to Congress saying, basically, "Nuh uh!" and take back over unless Congress votes to let the quasi-coup stand.

In the interview he speaks of companies, not countries. So I guess he made deals with 200 American lobbyists paying him for exceptions.

Oh I see. So this is more like 200 bribes taken to make exemptions, I guess.
