I lack the words to describe my disgust at the American administration for perpetrating this cruelty on an innocent man.

In several surveys, the overwhelming first choice for what makes Canada unique is multiculturalism. This, in a world collapsing into stupid, impoverishing hatreds, is the distinctly Canadian national project.

Yeah, that shit is evil.  Even if the guy was guilty of... something the idea that you can send a person to a foreign country to get around US law is simply wrong.

Yeah even if he was a criminal, that is cruel and unusual.

It's disgusting.

I had a certain sympathy for Bukele and the El Salvadoran government.  The country was such a disaster that it seemed like just rounding people up based on gang tattoos and nothing more was perhaps justifiable.

But to then act as Trump's personal gulag?  Ugg, does not sit well at all.

Stop having that.

People like Bukele crave chaos and lawlessness so they can substitute their own more organized and even more violent lawlessness for it.
We have, accordingly, always had plenty of excellent lawyers, though we often had to do without even tolerable administrators, and seen destined to endure the inconvenience of hereafter doing without any constructive statesmen at all.

I was reading a piece on the prison gulag. Absolutely brutal conditions, and they're saying none of the people they've incarcerated are ever coming out. Basically if they send you there, you stay there until you die.

That's... unsympathetic IMO.

Well at least during the transition period the civilians have it good. Remains to be seen for how long.

Actually I think transition periods are the most dangerous ones.  That's when the rules are not clear and ever evolving, and when people are just starting to get thirsty for blood.  Eventually people learn the rules by which to live by, and as long as your soul is sufficiently dead and you choose to obey, and you don't get unlucky, you'll be relatively safe.

HVC

I think it depends on what you're transitioning from. Going from order to chaos like say, off the top of my head, the US right now, can lead to some dangerous situations. But starting off from a dangerous situation, and El Salvador was definitely dangerous, a transition can  be beneficial. That's not to say it always is, or that the final state will be better for all. El Salvadors current transitory state, from what I can tell, has left the average person much better off.

I don't do meditation.  I drink alcohol to relax, like normal people.

If Microsoft Excel decided to stop working overnight, the world would practically end.

I mean when you plan on only having your personal dictator friends as your allies and otherwise plan on the US being an autarkic pariah police state, you just don't want international laws or allies or diplomacy.

Panama opposition party accuses US of 'camouflaged invasion'

I suppose this is what we'll get here if Poilièvre is elected.

I hope Denmark can reinforced Greenland with friendly Euro troops.

Better off putting a Russian base there. America would never invade their patron.

Don't tell me what to think or feel.

The lawlessness of El Salvador long-predated Bukele.  He did not create the chaos.

But it goes to the inherent contradiction of Trumpism (or at least one of them).  If you don't want a bunch of migrants coming to your country - do what you can to improve the conditions in those countries so migrants don't feel the need to migrate!

If you're the government of El Salvador I don't know what the exact best answer is to deal with rampant gang violence.  But clearly the status quo wasn't working all that well.

QuoteOn Monday afternoon, Harvard became the first university to refuse to comply with the administration's requirements, setting up a showdown between the federal government and the nation's wealthiest university. By the evening, federal officials said they would freeze $2.2 billion in multiyear grants to Harvard, along with a $60 million contract.
