Make the US relive the 70s. Take that revenue to offset the losses elsewhere. It'll take them a while to replace their source of crude oil. As that happens ramp down the tariffs to keep the pressure but still have them buy.

It's not like it hasn't been brought up. But Alberta probably won't be too happy.

But in the medium to short term they wouldn't lose, would they? Since America would still buy, just at inflated costs, until other sources are procured and brought online. The tariff revenue would offset any loses (short to medium term).

Again, I stress emphatically, not a economist. Minsky, come tell me I'm dumb lol

Quote from: crazy canuck on February 02, 2025, 08:59:36 AMYes, she has.

She met with Trump and explained the impact a 25% Tariff would have on Alberta oil will have on US gasoline prices.

She also pointed out that the only practical way to replace that input into the US refineries is to import from Venezuela.

Not only Albertans are happy she did that. You should be too, since a fairly large chunk of the BC budget is based on oil and gas revenues.

I like how the big win for Alberta here was to be treated with the same level of hostility as China rather than Canada.

Ford canceling $100 million starling contract signed in November. Which is good, but I wonder what the cancellation penalties are.

While I understand the sentiment, that seemed like a good service to provide. I hope there are alternatives.

The anger Canadians have is intense. Ford is heading into an election. This will be a popular move.

And now Trump has discovered that Canada doesn't allow US banks to operate like they do in the USA.

So he's gonna kick TD out of America?

Probably not. Generally, he wants us to let them in.

It's not true, but maybe an easy face saving way for Trump to say he made Canada let in US banks.

It's not really a problem anyway. Our Big 6 could do with some competition.

Like I said, American banks can offer services here now. Many do, but it's not on the retail side.  It's not worth it to them to compete in that market.  Instead they cater to the commercial side of things.

hmmm...that's what one source I have, a journalism school friend still in the industry is telling me, that Trump may drop tariffs if we let US banks operate here.

What are the implications of that?

None, because there are no restrictions.  We have a number of foreign banks operating here, including US banks.

It's a repeat of the Colombia "Threaten, piss of allies and get pushback, claim victory while retreating to the status quo".  Foreign policy for Trump is primarily about looking tough and distracting from what they are doing to the government.

At this point I don't care if he claims a win. Avoiding economic catastrophe with this version of the United States is good enough.
