I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

Though about posting something intelligent for a change, but too tired after readying/cooking during the festivities and of course, limited capabilities to start with.  :)

Is the low amount of posting in recent days the result of people being busy with holiday celebration or just that hardly anyone is posting during working hours?   :P

Dearth of respondable news IMO.

Forum of time wasters. Christmas holidays means no work and thus no time to waste :P

A weird sign of how the  country has changed.
15 years ago supermarkets would have greeters at the front. Usually a little old lady or very occasionally a flamboyantly camp gay guy.
They worked their way up from the checkouts and customer service and just generally said hello to people coming in and helped with coordination at the front of the shop, charity events and so on.

These days they're gone.
Instead there's a security guard in a stab proof vest. Nearly always a large African guy no matter how white the area.
Not knocking those guys, one at a local shop here at least is really friendly and helpful.

Some of course would kneejerk scream about immigrants.
But really points to something much worse for me. A rise in petty crime, the police ceasing to care, and supermarkets no longer make an effort to appear a positive part of the community, they're all business.

I'd call this "sweating the small stuff". Grocery stores, as distributors of food, are positive forces in the community. Not employing an old person to say hello is not a downward turn in society.

I think the point was not that the old people are not employed anymore, but rather than the stores feel it's necessary to replace them with big guys who mean business.

There's actually a video that was making the rounds lately of two shoplifters in the back of a cop carrealizing that stealing is a felony in California again. Sometimes being "soft on crime" does increase crime.
