It's interesting how a decades old regime can just completely disintegrate within a week or two.

Let's hope the new regime is at least a bit better, which is not a high bar.

Nothing ever seems to get better in that area
Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".
Hubris must be punished. Severely.

Fortunately we have a President who will stand up to Erdogan, and won't let Turkey dominate post-war Syria.  For about a month.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Reuters reports that Assad's plane disappeared.  High likelihood of being Prigozhined, it says.

It does seem things will get messy with the range of opposition from democrats to moderate Islamicists to islamofascists. Then there's the kurds who should have their chance now but... Turkey.

Why?
His use was declining but he was still loyal to Putin (I think?) and the best option for Vlad in Syria.

I understood that the main factions driving this recent change are actually hostile to Turkey. The leader is designated as a terrorist by Turkey (and EU, US).

Yeah he's a Sunni jihadi with a PR campaign. But it is a humiliation for Russia and Iran. Haniyeh, Nasrallah and now Assad all gone over a few months. Cold War 2.0 with the DragonBear is off to a bracing start.

Good luck to the Syrians...

They are at least signalling moderation in religious matters, so there is some room for optimism. Compared to the Assad regime and the civil war of the last decade, it doesn't take much to be an improvement.

The Israelis will kill him if he gets too spicy.

The taleban also signalled moderation. They're jihadis, they lie for their religion.

The world isn't black and white.
I'm not big on the UAE. Really shitty government with massive human rights abuses.
But compared to Daesh? Are you kidding? Clearly better.
Compared to a secular brutal regime? - probably also better even for me never mind if you're a conservative Muslim.
Fingers crossed they stay more towards that side of things considering Syria has a lot more diverse religious groups and "modern minded" folk than Afghanistan.

You're the naiive one here. Seeing anything Muslim as instantly meaning full on Daesh genocidal orgies.

Erdogan is a "moderate Islamist".  These guys are extremists.  They just learned that you don't declare war on everyone at once, like ISIS did.  Still, they are Islamists that are killing the other Islamists that even more hostile to us.

The Kurds are already under attack.  If Harris had won, we could defend them.  Now that Trump is coming in Rojava is doomed.  Unless Europe wants to stand up and fight for them.

Some in the West are hoping these Jihadists will have a 'on the road to Damascus' conversion.  :hmm:
