I was reflecting on how quickly things have changed.

Of course, it may be just one odd season.  The second odd seaon in a row that I actively notice.

Back when I used to work on construction sites, in the mid to late 90s, we were pouring concrete as late as we could.  That meant 'til mid to late November sometimes.

But by then, we would have had a first snow.  Sometimes, more than once.  I remember we were bringing shovels and torch with us.  We were shoveling the snow, or blowing the torches to melt the snow depending on what were the conditions.

It was very cold at this time of the year in the early morning.  We would arrive on site for 7:00 am, so I would get up at 5:00 to be ready for this part of my day before coming back to the office in the afternoon for the rest of the day and the evening.

Temperatures were around 0C. -2 to +2 I'd say when we arrived on site, warming up a bit more, up to 5-7C during mid day.  Not uncommon to have the ground frozen in the morning.

Now, here I am, waking up at 6:00am everyday for work, it's a nice 5-7C every morning of mid November when I wake up.  No snow yet, not freezing.  2017 is the last time I saw lots of snow in October, IIRC.

In less than 30 years, things have changed quite dramatically climate wise.

I remember being a kid and it was freezing during Halloween, let alone fall starting pretty soon after school. Now, I don't know if it's false memories, or remembering the outliers, to be fair.

As a kid there was almost always snow on the ground by Halloween (this would have been in Saskatoon).

But still - now for my kids, living in Edmonton, it's pretty uncommon to have snow on the ground by Oct 31.

Actually - "snow on Halloween" is probably my strongest gut level reaction on how I "know" global warming is happening.

I mean it wasn't like we never had warm Octobers in Texas back when I was a kid. It is just now every October is warm. We used to have cold Octobers every once in a while.

Today is November 19.  We now have a skiff of snow, with a more thorough snowfall expected on Thursday.

Growing up we'd have a full cover of snow by now.

Now it basically snows a week or two before Christmas (a dusting) and won't snow again until February. On the flip side, we get later storms into late march early April, but they melt off soon.

I'm with you BB, warm Jalloween is the sign that climate change is here & affects us daily. This year, Halloween was so warm here that children trick or treated without coats. When I was my son's age, Halloween was -31C.


Montreal will see only dusting of snow that will melt off until Christmas. November and early December snow cover is a thing of the past.
