Quote from: Admiral Yi on August 04, 2024, 09:22:14 PMF16s have arrived.

This is the moment of greatest danger.  Pilots without combat experience in the jets are going to be much more vulnerable to attack, and we now that Russia will expend considerable effort to attack them, given the payoff in morale (on both sides) if they succeed.  This is the time for the F-16s to only take baby steps.

Maybe they'll start by augmenting airdefences in the interior? Allowing pilots to get more hands-on experience, allowing more F16s to arrive and allowing for more strikes against Russian airdefences?

Also saw a newsblurb somewhere that Russia is moving it's air assets deeper into Russia.

But who knows, other than that Russia will indeed try to destroy the jets with extreme prejudice, as well as claiming they've destroyed 10 times the number of f16s in existence.

Apparently Ukraine has been taking some land around Kursk, and are still gaining ground.

It'll be interesting to see how substantial it is. But even it's just smaller bits of ground gained, it's worth noting as a counter to the various Russian nibbles over the summer.

Grey Fox

I find it interesting to gage the West reaction to it. Russia is obviously not going to nuke anything and hopefully that particular line being crossed means we can give them more long range assets with authorization to use them against target in Russia proper.
Colonel Caliga is Awesome.

Where did you hear this?
I read of a kursk attack but I gathered it was just a raid and they'd already gone home.

An interesting thing I did read about it is how keen the Russians were to surrender. Apparently almost throwing themselves at the Ukrainians hands up.
Goes to show how they'd be inclined to behave sans barrier troops...

And very muted from Kyiv - probably exactly to destabilise Russia on what they're doing and not draw too much attention from Western friends.
Let's bomb Russia!

An explanation

BBC News - State of emergency declared as Ukraine launches raid into Russia
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cm2n9y4nm3lo

QuoteOn Wednesday evening, Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Honcharenko said the Ukrainian army had established control over the Sudzha gas hub - a major gas facility involved in the transit of natural gas from Russia to the EU via Ukraine, which has continued despite the war. It is the only point of entry for Russian gas into the EU.

Saw a video from a russian in Sudzha, a town apparently controlled by the Ukrainians in Kursk oblast. Upon seeing the Ukrainian flag fly over city hall, he asked the soldiers what the civilians should do now.

Dude answered "learn the Ukrainian anthem and prepare for the referendum".  :D

Risky probe that paid off. But this is probably just a raid.:hmm:

crazy canuck

Will the Russians be forced to devote more forces to defend their own border now?

That's not a small border raid that captures a couple villages for a few days. The Ukrainians are deploying multiple brigades. This is either a stroke of genius or a wasteful misuse of manpower and equipment that will not be used to rotate exhausted units where the russians are advancing. :hmm:

Seems to me like they are aiming at disrupting the Karkhiv supply line.

Well godspeed to them in any case.

russians are already using glide bombs on Ukraine-occupied towns in russia proper. I hope Ukraine is just thunder-raiding and not planning to occupy, because it's obvious the Kremlin doesn't give a shit about its own cities and citizens.
