Quote from: Josquius on August 31, 2023, 02:54:43 AMAnarcho capitalist adds a bit more description to the flavour of far right. Have we had one of those yet? Anarcho capitalism is usually what happens when a government fails, not intentionally....

I dabbled in anarcho-capitalism once. Not in 'Nam of course.

:D

I'm hoping for a future career in archeo-capitalism.

It speaks more to the abject failure of the Argentian political class, than any, "let's start some pogroms and torture leftists" ; So as you say, that's probably the desperate attitude of many voters there.

Even if disgruntled I'm not sure this would appeal:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/aug/14/argentina-far-right-populist-javier-milei-shock-lead-primary-presidential-elections
QuoteOut on the street, Milei fanatics waved the yellow Gadsden flag of the US extreme right, bearing a black rattlesnake on a yellow background and the "Don't tread on me" slogan that is a regular feature at his rallies.

Milei said: "This election will not only put an end to Kirchnerism, but also to the parasitic, larcenous, useless caste that is sinking the country." As has become his custom, he dedicated the victory to his dead dog Conan and three surviving dogs.

...

Milei, 52, has a wiry mane of unkempt hair and struts like a rock star during his fiery campaign appearances. He has described himself as anti-abortion and claims that global heating is a "socialist lie".

He says students in Argentina's free public education system are "hostages of a system of state indoctrination" and has promised to abolish sex education in schools. Milei has suggested replacing Argentina's free public education up to and including university studies with a "voucher" system and has hinted that he would end obligatory primary schooling.

In a YouTube campaign video, Milei announced that he would disband a number of ministries that he deems unnecessary. "Culture ministry – out! Environment – out! Ministry of women and gender diversity – out! Public works – out! Science – out! Labour and social security – out! Ministry of education and indoctrination – out!" Milei yelled.

...

Milei's antics have continued during his presidential campaign, including his proposal to legalise people selling their organs. "If women can have control over their bodies, why not everybody else?" he has said.
"I've never been quite sure what the point of a eunuch is, if truth be told. It seems to me they're only men with the useful bits cut off."
I drank because I wanted to drown my sorrows, but now the damned things have learned to swim.

"It looks very well made and intricate, considering it was made 5,000 years ago"

Just heard that descrption of a Egyptian senat boardgame during a radio program about boardgames. :hmm:

I don't know, but I feel a lot of stuff crafted during ancient societies were indeed well made, certainly from some of the finds I've seen .
And possibly a lot more intricate stuff just didn't survive down the centuries, especially weaving of clothes or plant fibres and to a lesser extent woodwork.

Yeah. A pretty basic slave placement mechanic.

Yes. Both Macri and the Kirchnerists have failed. It's really sad what's happened to Argentina - I think it now has a higher poverty rate than Ecuador which feels unsupportable for Argentines with their self-image. His VP candidate does broadly defend the junta, which is a trend in Latin America. Bolsonaro and Kast both explicitly admired Brazilian and Chilean military juntas - of course also met with a second "pink wave" in much of Latin America. But with Brazil, for example, Biden was repeatedly very clear that the US expected election results to be respected etc - you wonder what would have happened if Trump was still in the White House.

I read something that basically said Milei instead gestures to pre-Peronist politics (and also loves Menem, the pre-Kirchner) because in Argentina the catastrophic failure of the military to win a war of choice has utterly undermined them as political actors. Something striking about the fact that that's the disqualifying factor - and difference with Brazil and Chile - not the dirty war :(

Also think it's worth noting that those five dogs are all clones of his original dog. Conan is named for the barbarian, the rest are named for Chicago school economists.....

QuoteSo basically an ideal GOP candidate
Hven't really thought it through fully or developed it - but one of my theories of what's going on in the US is that it's actually more American than they thought and there's lots of overlaps with Latin America. Which is a little underexamined because (not unlike Argentina) the US sees itself as different

For something I'm writing... I need the name of a relatively posh French grocery store chain (say, the French Whole Foods equivalent).

Duque de Bragança

In a French context, grocery store chains are not that very posh.  :P

I suppose you mean posher than Paul for bakeries/cafés/restaurants?

Grey Fox

Auchan, Carrefour, Casino & Cora seemed to be their big 4. As DdB said, they don't like giant & mid-major grocery store all that much.

I'd browse Paris on google map for a random posh neighborhood food store.

Or Naturalia, another comparable possibility.
