Yeah - Hunt was Foreign Secretary so has had the big job before. Cynically you'd say it's ambition and desire to boost your post-politics earning. Chancellor is a big thing to have on the CV - second only to PM (though I suspect Kwarteng won't be able to coin it giving speeches on leadership ).

But many politicians are genuinely in politics - which is a shit job - because they want to make change/do something. So that may be part of it. But also there's a crisis and if you think you can calm everyone down (especially given that they still have an 80 seat majority) - then this is also being called to do something in the national interest. Again I think that is a motivation, if the PM comes to you and says they need someone with your credibility for the good of the country.

Calming things down would be a real achievement by Hunt, even if he only gets to do the job for a few weeks. At one level the whole fiasco is hilarious but there are real consequences and people are having their lives blighted by Kwarteng's carelessness...so stopping the rot is a worthwhile task to undertake.
