I saw that - screenshot of his entry in register of MP's interest from 11 years ago. Weak sauce.

And in other happy news.

Labour conference motion to switch to PR passes.
Really hope this goes somewhere. Its massive. Promising to turn the UK into a democracy is a very good thing.
Hopefully in an election will do more to turn lib dems tactical than to scare away small c conservatives

Heard this today from another place, saying that this could mean that Truss' time as PM is on track to be the UK's shortest ever. Surely it'd also be a new record for Tory infighting, right?

Indeed. I understand how the moment you become the biggest party then you want to keep FPTP but this would be a nice clear radical message of how voting Labour would change things for the better with one fell swoop (whether it would is a separate academic debate, and beside the point, it would make things more democratic at least).

So how long can this go till the Tories split into separate factions?
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

But it'd be yet another internal Tory election, right? Sunak doesn't feel like running again?

I honestly have no idea what remains on the bottom of the barrel after Truss. Sure Sunak could run again but what would be the optics of that?

I started to type how it is just quite incredible how much Brexit ruined us since in a lot of ways these are still political ripples from it. Which is true but also not entirely correct - a Remain victory in the referendum would still have resulted in a Tory party tearing itself apart and a Corbyn-led Labour would have never won an election. Rather, this crisis is hard-coded in the election system and the unshed cultural thinking of empire (exceptionalism mostly).

I think another lesson is that you shouldn't let rank and file members choose the parliamentary leader of a party, they invariably choose wankers.

How many of the last UK PMs were chosen by the Tory membership rather than in a general election?

The last three

Perhaps more importantly Truss is not the choice of the parliamentary conservative party, ie the ones with the actual power...it is a recipe for chaos.
