I mean the only memory I have of the last jubilee concert (I think organised by Gary Barlow) was Grace Jones performing Slave to the Rhythm while hula-hooping.

I occasionally re-watch it on Youtube to check that it did really happen

It does seem like the lighting director got most praise on Twitter this time round.

Apparently there was another big jubilee celebration thing a decade ago then?
My gf told me some of her friends talked about this. I was certain this was a miscommunication and it was the Olympics or wedding or something.
But there was another jubilee celebration recently?

I think there's been one every ten years after 2002. 2012 was Grace Jones with a hula hoop.

There was definitely one - I can't remember when this was - where they were going to do a massive flotilla of boats up the Thames and it absolutely pissed it down all day

I think as she's getting older they should do one every year now with a couple of extra bank holidays

Yes, in June 2012 it was the Diamond Jubilee.

Just checked, and it seems that Lizzie has had 6 jubilees during her whole reign, 4 of them since the 00s. She's had a Silver Jubilee in 1977, a Ruby Jubilee in 1992, a Golden Jubilee in 2002, a Diamond Jubilee in 2012, a Sapphire Jubilee in 2017 and the current Platinum one. I know you Brits fetishize the Monarchy, but this seems like overkill.

I don't think there was anything to celebrate ruby or sapphire.

It's the same as anniversaries isn't it? So they'll have loads of names but the only ones that were actually marked were 1977 (Sex Pistols), 2002 (no idea), 2012 (Grace Jones), 2022 (drones).

As I say - as she's getting older and we're not likely to get any under Charles - I think we need to mark them all regularly with more summer bank holidays.

It's probably because they keep thinking she'll die before the next one, so each one is supposed to be the last one.

4 are still more than plenty.

How about winter bank holidays instead?  :P

Don't know - I'm very pro-jubilee as long as I get the day off. Not sure that you can really have too many.

Day off work in the dark with crap weather and it's not even Christmas :x

You seem to base all your approval of jubilees on you getting days off. How about massive jubilees but no days off whatsoever? Is that enough to turn you into a Republican?  :P

That is Grace's one go-to dance move.

Oh I'm a total republican - but I hope we'd have some good holidays to celebrate the Supreme Being and Virtue and the like....

But I also struggle to moan about or dislike something thousands of people are clearly enjoying - so I tend to take the opposite approach of the Guardian and Republic and dial down my republicanism during jubilees and royal weddings etc.

Generally because we get a day off and loads of people seem to have a good time - I feel like it's probably not the right time to talk to them about getting rid of the royals or why monarchy is inherently wrong. They don't normally want to hear it and it's a bit Cromwell and the Puritans

Edit: I suppose the comparison in Spain would be someone who doesn't like the Church deciding to mainly complain during one of the parties for a saint's day - it's not the right time even if it's not a display of actual devotion in the people.

I'm fine with the monarchy (it wouldn't be created if it didnt exist but the sums do add up) and love days off. What irks me a bit about all this is that in some areas there is quite the tight Venn between nationalists and being into the jubilee.
Though given where I am seeing Street parties happening and not happening I do wonder whether there could be a few small steps towards flag reclamation going on.

Honestly I think we should have a Dutch style King's/Queen's day which was a public holiday every year. Parades for those so inclined, pubs for the rest.

It is weird with our bank holiday that a lot of them don't really mark anything. There's Christmas, New Year's Day and Easter. But aside from that there's the August bank holiday and the two May ones which aren't for anything - we just have them. Which I think is a bit unusual and most countries tie public holidays to an event.
