I dunno - sounds like a pretty cheap way to fill one's belly.  Which is probably why you'd eat it in the 19th century.

I sometimes ate "butter sandwich" as a kid when we couldn't afford pricier fillings.

When I was little growing up in Soviet Ukraine, we had something similar, only open-faced and without the toast.  Sometimes without the butter too, since it wasn't always sold.
