Title: Advice Wanted
Post by: Zeus on May 08, 2013, 01:39:21 AM
I come here not for lack of resources but because I'm curious as to what the fine people of Languish will say. I'm going to spend a summer in Anchorage, Alaska, and I know absolutely nothing about what to bring, what to do while I'm there, or how I'll pass the time. I was curious as to whether anyone here has been there and could point me to some interesting locales. Yeah, I could scour the internet for biased as shit advertising, but fuck that. Also, if you don't know much about Alaska but you do know travelling, anything interesting would be welcome.

If it's Roman era stuff you're after I'd take a weekend to see Pompeii or Herculaneum (I'd pick Herculaneum personally) and spend some time in Naples (the archaeological museum is a must and the Greek/Roman Neapolitan bits are mostly underground but accessible too), but stick to Rome and environs the rest of the time. Rome just has so much to offer it'll be a waste to go elsewhere.

Close to Rome, you'd want to visit Ostia, Hadrian's Villa near Tivoli (Tivoli itself is rather nice too) and the Via Appia park (including catacombs). You'll probably need a full day for each. Pick a Sunday for the Via Appia, no cars will be allowed.
More later.

First off my condolences. Hopefully the weather will warm up as this April was one of the coldest on record and we even had snow Saturday morning (wasn't cold enough to actually accumulate).

The best bets on what to do while here is get down south to Kenai peninsula for some fishing, visit Homer, Seward.
Take trips to Talkeetna and Denali park to north.
Anchorage it self has amazing bike trails and some fun hiking spots in city limits (eastern part of town is on the Chugach State Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chugach_State_Park)

The fun thing about summer time if we aren't freezing is will have 18-20 hours of daylight so can be disconcerting for some, but means activities going on all through out the day.

Places to eat include
Bear's Tooth and Moose's Tooth restaurants
Orso and Glacier Brewhouse
Yak and Yeti
Snow City Cafe
Humpy's

If over 21 check out Chilkoot Charlie's (huge bar with 7 distinct and separate areas) at least once for the experience.

Those are just some of the first thoughts off top of my head.

Don't accept invitations from katmai to visit him at his home.

Reminds me of an Alaskan joke.

This fellow moves to a remote location in Alaska to get away from people and concentrate on his writing. But after a few weeks, he starts getting a bit lonely.

Just then he gets a visit from a "neighbour", a great big shaggy tattooed fellow living in a cabin in the next valley. The neighbour invites him to a party at his place the next night.

Wanting to be sociable after the weeks of isolation, our hero accepts.

"Oh, by the way", says the shaggy man, "I hope you don't mind ... there is going to be some drinking".

Our hero assures him that he's used to that.

"Oh, and I have to tell you ... after the drinking, there is usually some fighting"

This gives our hero some pause, but he says he's man enough to hold his own.

"And I have to warn you ... after the fighting, there's usually, you know, some fucking".

Our hero says: "I'm up for that! Gets kinda lonely around here. I'm happy to meet your neighbours and friends."

The shaggy man wrinkles his brow. "Neighbours? Friends? No, it's just gonna be the two of us".

That reminds me of a joke I first heard in elementary school and still makes me laugh.

Starts off  with asking "if you were camping and you woke up in the middle of the night and your ass was bleeding would you tell anyone?"

They invariably answer with a no

To which you reply "wanna go camping?"

Don't know why it makes me laugh, but it does. Also, enjoy Alaska. Watch out for the bears :P

Like any travels, I always recommend to pack for any kind of weather and a camera.
Now, is this leisure or work? In any case, Alaska does not seem like an easy place to live in, not even in summer. So don't expect it to be easy.

Now, make sure you go to the state fair, and if you see some dirty mexican selling fish tacos make sure you kick him in the nuts.

A bit more comprehensive this time...

Like katmai said...be ready for long days.  It can be great for outdoor activities, but you also get the "hmm, it's probably not too late...WTF IT'S 11PM" effect.

If it gets into the 70s-80s, it'll be a heat wave.  Bring clothing for any kind of weather, but you can probably tone down the winter gear (depending on your actual dates), but you'll definitely want rain gear.  And a camera, definitely.

If you're able to bring a bicycle, the trails through town are awesome.  If you cannot bring one, look into getting a cheap one for the duration.  The trails are great for getting across parts of town, seeing the coastline (and the hotties who jog along it).

Hiking recommendations:

- Flattop: It's right at the edge of Anchorage, and gives great views with a low chance of bears (plenty of moose though).
- Exit Glacier/Harding Icefield: Worth the trip down to Seward, and best late in the summer (upper parts of the trail will still have snow patches into September).  Be VERY bear-aware (first half of the trail is through 8-foot high brush), but the views/scenary are fantastic.  Also, it's not short, and it's very up-hill.
- South Fork Eagle River: A good, fairly level trail out to some high mountain lakes.  Very cool trail, also very rocky/muddy.  Add good boots to that list of required items.

If you get car access, some good scenic drives include the Hatcher Pass area up beyond Palmer/Wasilia, and maybe even the Matanuska Glacier out down the Glen Highway.  If you're still there for the (one) week of awesome fall colors, a drive out that way, and down the Copper River valley to Valdez is freakin' amazing.  But even without the fall colors, the highway to Valdez has another awesome glacier literally right off the side of the highway, that you can walk right up to.

Also:

- A railroad trip up to Denali is also a cool idea as well.
- Hit up the weekend farmer's (really crafts/food) market downtown for cool souvenirs for the family back home.
- As katmai said...if there are two restaurants that are a must-go, it's Moose's Tooth pizza and Snow City cafe (for breakfast).
- If you like carrot cake, Fire Island Rustic Bakery has the some of the best I've ever come across.

And thanks everyone for the great ideas, I will probably be hitting up every restaurant I can that was mentioned, and probably most of the hiking trails.

What's your deal Zeus?  Long time hanger-on in the game room?

Zues, think long and hard before you answer this question.  It will determine your classification on the Languish scale from now until the end of time.

Can I at least be privy to the spectrum before I'm arbitrarily placed on it?

And thanks everyone for the great ideas, I will probably be hitting up every restaurant I can that was mentioned, and probably most of the hiking trails.
It is leisure, sort of. My uncle offered to fly me up there, get me a job, and find me a place to live for the summer. I'll be working a lot, but I'll have a lot of down time. What I don't spend writing I will spend on all of your suggestions. And yes, fish taco will be high on the priority list.

Do you write sonnets? :)

When pressed, I can write an iambic pentameter sonnet fairly quickly.

This place is all about branding someone in an arbitrary way.

But on the current most popular basis of assessment we dont know enough about you to know if you are a gun nut, your position on maximizing shareholder value or whether you are a Patriots fan.

I have two pieces of advice, despite never having been to Alaska.

1: Listen to everything Tonitrus says, that guy knows what's up.

2: If it scares you, do it.

Honestly, if I had to encapsulate the essence of manliness into one phrase it would be the risk-taking. Take risks. Don't let any girls tell you to buy japanese government bonds. Do everything. Try everything.

MIM, that's shitty advice.  And being a man is certainly NOT about taking risks.

Many risks are, lets face it, stupid.  Petting it all on black is a stupid risk.  Trying cocaine is a stupid risk.  Many extreme sports are stupid risks.  Bonds can be an excellent investment.

The trick, of course is to only take the right risks.  This sounds like a good one (mind you this is from the guy who liked the Yukon so much he moved there for 4 years).

Unless you have a heart condition, sniffing coke is probably a risk worth taking if you feel like.  Smoking it less so, and IVing even less so.

Still, too much coke + too much alcohol is risky, since they create cocaethylene as a byproduct, which gets you higher but puts more strain on the old cardiovascular.  Not that it's very likely you'll be encountering coke if you aren't drinking to some extent already...

Trying toot is not a stupid risk.  It's not physically addictive.  It doesn't immediately start to kill your brain cells.

Trouble with coke is that you might really, really like it.  Even if it's not physically addictive, lots of people have fucked up their lives on cocaine.

Plus the risk it's been cut with something.

I think I mentioned I have actually used cocaine. :o

I was 13, and some idiot intern used it to stop a nosebleed that had gone on for hours  (Cocaine does constrict blood vessels in the nose)

That was a seriously miserable couple of hours for me.

Sure we have gun enthusiasts.  But I would hardly characterize Malthus or people like him as a gun nut.  You have people saying they need guns to protect themselves from their government and assert that regulating gun rights is somehow a violation of a fundamental right.  That is a gun nut and you would be hard pressed to find such a person in a civilized country like Canada.

"Gun nuts" (by which I mean someone to whom the ownership of weapons is more than simply recreational, useful, or for protection, but has some larger symbolic/social meaning - like gun rights being *the* guarantee of personal liberty, or survivalists assuming that a likely distopian future is to need guns to live) may well exist in Canada, but I will say this: if they do, they must be rare. I've never met any.

I also have family property in the country, surrounded by real-life country folks.

In fact, bordering our property is property owned by the local Fish and Game Club.

http://www.theorilliafishandgameconservationclub.com/

My dad works closely with these people, all of whom, of course, have guns; I have known many of them all my life. Yet despite knowing many, maybe even dozens, rural gun owners, who belong to what could only be described as a hunter's club, not one is what I would call a "gun nut". Would a rural hunter's club in the US be likely to have some "gun nuts"? I'm inclined to believe, from a certain amount of experience, it is possible.  ;)

Rather, they are more "into" conservation - well, admittedly, so they will have creatures to hunt in the future, but still.

I think that is an overly specific definition of the term "gun nut". I would just use it to describe anyone that is nuts about guns, including several forum members.  :P Anti-government paranoia may encourage one to become a gun nut, but it is hardly a requirement.

I wanna go to Mexico, but I don't have any good travel companion for this so it'd be a solo voyage, and everyone tries to talk me out of it as being too dangerous.  But maybe with MIM's admonitions, I should just go for it this summer.  I've planned and replanned my trip several times in the last few years (Mexico DF, then to Veracruz by express bus, and back to Mexico City with a visit to Puebla on the way back, or from Veracruz up to Xalapa then back).  I do have tons of Mexican relatives, but the only one I knew was my great-uncle Hermán, who died a few years ago.
