Hickory Farms? What the fuck.  Just... what the fuck.

I've gotten several bottles of wine.  Boss is taking us out to lunch and I'm told the goal is to soak him for all he's worth.

Also a giant bottle of Baily's Irish Cream, a bottle of sparkling cider.  Yays.

You know, it sounds like I'm bitching about it, but I'm kinda not.  All I ever get from my my stepsisters is gift cards; all I ever give them is gift cards of roughly equal value.

I'd like to say that the former is because they've never bothered taking an interest in me, but in fairness I am notoriously hard to shop for.  Like, Korea only ever got me like one gift I actually enjoyed (a Gamera movie that I didn't have--ironically enough, I think it was after we'd broken up, or right before  ).  And she had an uncanny knack for buying things in the general category of "things I like" but which exempted themselves because of my picky tastes (e.g., intellectual history of classical Greece, when I'm more interested in Macedonian Greece and military and economic affairs at that--just how can you get those confused? ).  So people that honestly barely know me and have nothing in common with me whatsoever are unlikely to buy me anything I'll enjoy.

For my part, I can only buy them gift cards because they appear to have no interests or hobbies other than being overweight.  So restaurant gift cards it is.

My blood sister bought me the Williams and Rucka Batwoman hardcover and the complete series of SportsNight last year though.  Good gifts!  And I chose a gift for her so well she'd already bought it herself.  So I kept it too!  That was pretty awesome.

Maybe if it was the set with all the jellies, I could stomach it.

A friend of mine said he actually loved Hickory Farms.  Which made me gag.  Seems like a thoughtless gift you buy when you don't care enough to buy Lindt chocolate or a loaf of day old bread.

Got the annual Omaha Steaks pack from my biological dad, and a bottle of Decourtet XO from my boss. That's it so far not including all the vendor swag.

Edit: I posted too fast. The CFO just came in with a bottle of wine.

Well, my family is spread through Europe and U.S., I spend Christmas Eve as usual with friends, and we don't gift each other anything, so no Christmas Loot for me.

Considering how my family gifted me in the past increasingly thoughtless/nondescript stuff, I can't say I'm sorry about it.

Tyndall or Stinson? I love the watches but I don't like their bands.

EDIT: unless you got the steel band, which is a-otay.

So far I've received a Milwaukee sawzall, a nice set of different blades for it, a shirt, a little cash, and some Bay Rum cologne (thanks Mom).

I also reroofed the garage and procured a 21-cubic-ft freezer and a new water heater, which are more "household gifts" than "me gifts" but they sure as fuck make me happy.

My company got us 20 rmb gift certificates to a bakery. That's ~$3.
My boss gave us 100rmb, cash. Much nicer. :)
I also got some nice tea from a coworker.

Besides that, I'll only get what I buy myself.

So far a GPS doohickey, some tools, and some gift cards.

Oh I bought myself a new printer yesterday when I went up there to get some ink.  I guess that counts.  The ink was going to be like $50.  The printer was $99 (50% off), and it has automatic two sided printing, which the old one didn't and it pissed me off every time I had to turn the paper like a tard.  What can you do?

a bunch more nuts (salt free, too  )
M&Ms and various other candies
more ammo  (total haul: 1,100 rounds of .22LR and 50 rounds of 9mm)
one of those CamelBak backpacks
money

gift certificate for conceal carry class  :smoke:
case of Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale
case of Weihenstephaner Weissbier

I just got done setting up the Kinect for Princesca and she played her Zumba game, and got me to do it a little bit... the sensor must be retarded because it thought I was doing well.

Oh, I forgot, I also got a toy 12-gauge break action shotgun, with four shells, realistic gun sounds (batteries not included), ejector springs for when you open the action, and a plastic US Marshal badge.  I spent like five minutes pretend-shooting my dog when I got home. :)

What's wrong with Lindt?
Nothing.  I got a quantity of it.  Its just that Lindt is actually edible, whereas most of what Hickory Farms sells is only technically food.

I always get a locally made Summer Sausage.  Actually, I don't know how far they distribute, just that they make it only about 40 miles away.  "Burger's Smokehouse".

How are those Kindle Fires, Berkut and Garbon?  Been thinking of buying one for myself for xmas.

Well thus far, I've liked it thought I haven't really thought of myself as a tablet person. Haven't tried to read a book on it yet so can't speak to that. Screen seems pretty responsive to touch. Have had a few times where it got hung up trying to load webpage and had to reload. I do love the size. Small but still large enough not to cause discomfort.

A real nice tool bag full of goodies to have in the truck.
A big tin of candied pecans, love that stuff.
A big batch of crab salad by an aunt, awesome stuff.
A bottle of Chivas Regal, came in handy last night, ouch!
Some pajama pants, t-shirt, book light, a Star Wars sound effects doohickey, a glow in the dark Fushigi ball <_<, maybe some other stuff I can't remember until I eat something and drink a couple of gallons of water.

Anyway, to be home for the season was more than enough for me, a lot better than 7k miles away in the desert like last year.

Grey Fox's idea is much better then mine.  I think he should go with the home project of a wood burning brick oven rather then the possible B&E charges that come with being a fairy tale Pizza Elf.  The more I think about, the idea of breaking into people's houses to kook them pizza seems somewhat unreasonable.

Are you going to be doing some soldering soon? Really gratifying work IMO. My first job during high school was working for the guy who owned the TWA pilot's shop in the St. Louis airport. One of the things he had me do was assemble headsets from wholesale parts. He gave me a buck for every completed headset. Eventually I could do quite a few of them over an evening or a weekend. Decent money for a high school job, and I didn't have to sling burgers.

Looks cool and a nice usable bike to boot.

Always shitty to have a bike nicked, a mate's son had his bike nicked a couple of months ago, and he managed to find it on ebay, though he had to move heaven and earth to get the police to do anything about recovering the bike and arresting the perp.

Incidentally, I just converted one of my hack/pub bikes into a single speed; it works surprisingly well, so much so I've decided it's not one of my usual bodges but can possible be categorized as a 'proper job'.  :)

I got a couple of these in a late arriving package:

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fhighwave.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2009%2F07%2Fau-glass.jpg&hash=c8f5a120c2278763abd07c6f5bac91577fda67a3)

http://highwave.com/australian-beer-glass-brings-home-the-gold/

I didn't really know what to make of them when I opened them up.  It's like an upside down longneck inside a tube-thing.   I initially thought they were plastic, and was thinking it was kind of lame, etc.  After eyeballing the package more closely, I saw they're actually borosilicate glass (Pyrex), and....well shit after extensively "testing" them, they're not too bad.

The insulation works quite well, keeping the beers cold long after beers in my regular glasses would be toasty warm.  They aren't worth $16 each, but hey...mine were free for me.  They've actually turned out to be one of my favorite gifts this year, strangely enough.  Cleaning them down there at the bottom is going to be a bitch though if the dishwasher doesn't get everything or whatever.

Edit: $16 not $17.  Whatever.

That sounds like an awesome job.

It was pretty great. Other fun parts of the job: getting to take luggage to the leather repair shop, picking up flyers from the printer, and going down into the bowels of Lambert International Airport with a pass in order to drop off stuff at the shop. Worst part: having to mindlessly shrinkwrap hundreds of items.

Right tool for the right job; so I don't think shoes on their own are going to enable one to get somewhere 30 miles away in a hurry are they ?

No, but I've ridden a bicycle without shoes on and it is really uncomfortable.

You could say the same about most cars, and aren't you labouring the point for its own sake ? I was talking about modes of transportation, really it's not that difficult.  ;)

I didn't say anything about cars one way or the other. My point is that equating bicycles to shoes doesn't work very well.

Well I said tools or shoes, I think it works well in the sense I'm talking about it, that you need a different type of shoe for different journeys/terrain; it's not my problem that some posters here can't imagine a world without the gas pedal.  :P

Oh, yeah, if that's the argument, that definitely makes sense.

Yes, that was my original point, though ironically because I only ever cycle everywhere, I actually only ever use one type of shoe.  :)

The two most useful - widely applicable, and money-saving - home repair skillsets you can have are basic carpentry and basic plumbing.

Oh, also, the third skill - basic tree care. If you own a house and you don't manage your trees, they will definitely manage you.

Day after Christmas, ate at Mellow mushroom.  Got food poisoning for Christmas.  After two days of eating only crackers and plain yogurt, I LIVE!

Hope you feel better.

I never really liked the Mellow Mushroom all that much.  The one here is overpriced and overcrowded.  They never tried to kill me though.

Yes, although it's a bit like using a sledgehammer to swat a fly.

EDIT: Plus, who the fuck wants their house to look like they live in Singapore? :yuk:

Bonus Craftsman Mechanics tool set from co-brewer.  His family gave him two tool sets, and the lesser one was discontinued, so he couldn't return it.  So I got it!

Flies don't provide oxygen and remove pollutants from the air :contract:

EDIT: Don't look purty, neither.
