A fairly diverse range of candidates. Not sure who I'll vote for yet.
Why not post these as pictures rather than links???
Edit: Three of which do not work. You: fail at internet.

Anyways, I voted for the bearded dude at the top because I know who he is.

I don't think so. A mod probably can - ask CdM, as he has a boner for Ireland. :P

Yeah he's very popular with the gay community for some reason. ;)

Ok thanks.
Considering both Robert Shaw and Richard Harris are dead, my write-in is a Daniel-Day Lewis/Liam Neeson ticket.
David Cameron.
But...mine was first :(
#5 looks like a pub brawler with a bad fucking attitude. Got my vote.

Your one wasn't very well named. :P
But you did a better job with the poll.
I'd be tempted to vote for Martin McGuinness but I think he made an error in not participating in the shindig when the Queen visited Ireland. He needs to realise that the English are on the same side as him nowadays and would love to ditch NI if they had a good excuse............he'd have to temporarily forget a lot of history though :hmm:
For those unfamilar with the candidates (in no particular order):
One of the seven is a former Eurovision winner, ex MEP and is a Catholic fundie.
Another is the most well known gay politician in Ireland. They successfully campaigned to decriminalise homosexual acts in Ireland.
A Sinn Féin politician, the current deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland and a former IRA leader.
Is an entrepreneur who is best known as a panellist on the Irish version of Dragon's Den.
A former poet, broadcaster and currently a Labour politician. Was a cabinet minister in a couple of previous governments.
Currently serves as the Managing Director of Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia.
Centre right politician, a member of the most popular party in the country at the moment. Is a MEP and a former cabinet minister.
I voted #4, he looks like True IRA to me.
Or is it Reall IRA?

The idea of a euroskeptic eurovision winner makes me giggle.

No, not that one. The other one, those that rejects the accords. McKevitt's thing.
I voted for Mary Davis btw, looks like a safe pair of hands, but is she?
Helen Mirren is very sweet looking, but she has to be some kind of no blood for land mines nutter. I wouldn't wish #2 on my worst enemy. The professional wrestler is right out.
That leaves the gray haired suit, #5.
Everybody should be commended for their very nice skin however.

I don't know too much about her tbh. I imagine she would be a fairly safe but dull President.
But I can't bring myself to help vote in the third Mary in a row as President.

Do you have to be a natural born citizen of Ireland to run? Or can you be a Kenyan Muslim?
Guy #2 looks like a Notre Dame fan so I voted for him.
David Cameron.
Perhaps my troll will work here.

They need to be an Irish citizen (I don't think it matters if they're natural born or not) aged 35 or more.
They also need to get nominated by 20 members of the Oireachtas or 4 city/county councils.
That would make a lot of British people eligible, they would just need the one Irish grandparent and take Irish citizenship.
In fact.........gasp!.............I think it means that CdM is eligible if he takes up Irish citizenship
Presidents of Ireland are useless rubber-stampers, it seems, so any of them or the chair would accomplish the same.

Ditto. From what I've heard, the American branch of the family originally came over due to some drama involving nail bats colliding with catholic heads in a pub. The people involved are all dead now, so I can't get any details.
tsk tsk Beeb, Ulster is a province not a county, it has 9 counties and only 6 of them are in Northern Ireland.

I don't know which county though, though I'm pretty sure they came from Ulster itself.
Since we are sharing, my wife's Irish half were catholics from Newry, which is on the county Down and Armagh border.

It is a province...there are five traditional provinces of Ireland. Though Leinster appears to have eaten Meath at some point so now there are four I guess.

I'm pretty sure the Cathcarts wouldn't be caught dead fraternizing with papists. It was bad enough my mother married a Uke in the 70s (well no, not really).
Holy hell! Caliga could do the research, quick feed him your ancestors information.
I have Irish ancestors, no idea from where.

Someone was able to trace that part of my family as far back as the 1600s or so.
My Ukrainian side, however...

Heck when my Great-Grandfather married an Irish Catholic woman in the 20th century his family boycotted the wedding...though granted they were Southern Baptists in rural Texas.

That is very impressive. You can only go back to the 13th century at the earliest anyway since before then last names hadn't been invented for most people unless you are descended from some line of nobility (which granted almost everybody of British descent is to some extent).
No.1. I'd like to vote for Eamon O Cuiv if he were running though.

Yes, they are also known as fifths, so Ireland is divided into four fifths
In honour of this thread I decided to extend the Irish branches of my family tree. So far I have counties Tyrone, Cavan, and Monaghan.
How does a menno wind up having Irish roots? I could understand lots of different countries - Germany, Ukraine, Mexico - but Ireland?
My maternal grandfather joined the Mennonites. He was of old pioneer stock from SE Ontario-Prince Edward and Peterborough counties. Seems to be of Protestant Irish and Loyalist roots.

Dear God. Why would he do such a thing?
For a woman.
The Cavan branch of the family tree goes back to Kent, in England, where my great x4 grandfather shares a name and birth year with this guy.

My God those fuckers are ugly. Will TV reach Ireland soon?
