Title: Dishes of the days bygone
Post by: Martinus on June 27, 2011, 04:07:27 PM
So what are some of the dishes you used to eat and enjoy a lot (perhaps as a child, or perhaps later on in your life), but don't anymore - maybe they take a lot of effort to make, or you can't eat them for health reasons or for some other reason?

For me it's:
- "racuchy" (sort of dough dumplings filled with slices of apple, deep fried and then sprinkled with powdered sugar and cinnamon),
- pancakes,
- fruit milkshakes.

The first two are too fattening, and I can't be arsed to make fruit milkshakes (and the ones available at restaurants are just not that good as the ones made by my grandma),.

Ketchup.

I used to eat it on things as a kid, but now I never do. Mostly because it's downright nasty.

Salo.  I couldn't tolerate it once my taste buds developed.

I've cut out milkshakes and candy for health reasons, except for sugar-free candy, which I don't buy much because it's too ridiculous how much it costs compared to regular candy.

Some of my specialties that I cook myself I hardly ever make anymore because I just don't seem to have the time to do any real cooking.  :(

i actually still like no name brand ketchups. Heinz, however, is way too sweet and i can't stand it.

I don't know when it was when I realized just how sweet Heinz is, but I'm now at the point I can't stand it for just that reason.

I wonder if that name is at all related to rollkuchen, which is a very similar dish.

Pancakes. Waffles. Blood pudding with lingonberry jam. :mmm:

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpinuppsala.blogg.se%2Fimages%2F2011%2Fblodpudding_117406607_131621259_142631029.jpg&hash=667bd705c9b2aa3e79d788d7607a8554ff74ccd8)

As for dessert, I used to make this cake with three layers of whipped-cream mixed with marangue and Daim, topped with those little jelly strawberries. My parents complained about the insane sugar content, but I never got it. Marvellous treat. I should really try one out one of these days. See if my heart stops or not, as they claimed it eventually would.

That is not your fridge Slargos. Your kitchen cannot possibly look like that.

Besides, the writing on the foodand bills on the fridge are all in English.

Still living with my mam for the time being so still on childhood cooking largely, not much I'm missing out on...
Used to really like jam and bread when I was a kid, not now.
Carrots I apparently also once liked but now hate.
I used to love getting the crust of loaves of bread, was the best thing for soup, used to fight over it with my sister....now when I have my own bread I rarely even eat it. Just use it to stop the other bread getting mouldy.

I used to like those flavored ice strips when I was a kid, don't really see the point now.

My palate is becoming less discriminating, not more, so generally the foods I've stopped eating are just getting overlooked.

As a kid I used to like Hostess Twinkies, Devil Dogs, and most of those type sweets; Easter yellow marsh mellow chick things, but I haven't eaten those in years. I tried some of those a while back and they were so sickly sweet that I couldn't eat them at all.  I also don't eat any overly sweet breakfast cereals, though it's not easy to find cereals without sugar. Shredded wheat, Grape Nuts and Kashi brand cereals are some that I like and have no sugar, and a lower amount of ingredients.

I've never been a fan of hot foods. But lately I've taken a liking to a little bit of horse radish with sandwiches.

I think 95% of my fluid intake is soda.

Not sugar soda, though.  I eliminated that almost ten years ago.  Don't even like the stuff anymore.

(The other five percent is apple juice.  It's an excellent source of Vitamin C. :) )

Diet Dr. Pepper is OK.  I like Diet Mello-Yello a lot, and Diet Sundrop is pretty good.  I've been drinking a lot of Diet Cheerwine down here.

Yeah, there's even billboards for it on the highway.  I had first had Cheerwine in N. Carolina and thought it was only available there-ish.  But this is East Tennessee, I don't know if it's statewide.  Like Food City is one of the biggest supermarket chains here but I gather it is basically Appalachia only.

I haven't seen it.  The big East Tenn. specialty soda is "Dr. Enuf" from Johnson City, which is some kind of old-time tonic from the '40s, tastes like an herbal 7-Up with a bunch of B-vitamins and caffeine in it.  Atlanta soft drinks like Red Rock ginger ale seem common here too, but in the specialty rack.  Cheerwine on the other hand is in the coolers, 12-packs, etc.  Vernon's is common here too, unlike the Northeast.

Never heard of Dr. Enuf, but reading about it on Wiki makes it sound a lot like Ale-8, which is fairly popular around here--it's bottled in Winchester, Ky. out by Lexington.

The dumbest one I ever encountered was "Price Chopper", which was a chain up in Massachusetts and upstate New York, which of course means it's pronounced "Price CHAWPPAH". :D

They chop prices.

Concur on Piggly-Wiggly.  I think "Food Lion" sounds pretty cool.

Food Lion used to go by the name "Food Town".

Wish we had a Kroger's around here.  Nearest one's in Greenville (actually, there might be on in Smithfield, which is closer, but both are too far away to go just to go grocery shopping.

It wouldn't have gone well with the whale blubber, would have been too heavy for the dogsled, and we had no place to keep it in our igloo.

The thought of people living as Inuit yet speaking Plattdeutsch amuses me.

I actually eat far more things than I ate as a kid. I was beyond a fussy eater (unless it was candy related) I guess I don't eat a lot of home baked goods anymore, since I haven't lived with my mom in well over 2 decades. She still bakes stuff all the time, old lady living alone. Gives it to friends etc, mostly. Now I'm hungry dammit.

Ah, there's crab, wich I used to like.  Back when you got it for almost free as fishermen wanted to get rid of it.
I seem to have lost my taste for this at the same time the price went up.
