JACKSON, Miss. – A northern Mississippi school district will not be hosting a high school prom this spring after a lesbian student sought to attend with her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo.
The Itawamba County school district's board decided Wednesday to drop the prom because of what it called recent distractions but without specifically mentioning the girl's request, which was backed by the American Civil Liberties Union.
The student, 18-year-old high school senior Constance McMillen, said the cancellation was retaliation for her efforts to bring her girlfriend, also a student, to the April 2 dance.
"A bunch of kids at school are really going to hate me for this, so in a way it's really retaliation," McMillen told The Clarion-Ledger of Jackson. Calls to McMillen by The Associated Press late Wednesday went unanswered.
School policy requires that senior prom dates be of the opposite sex. The ACLU of Mississippi had given the district until Wednesday to change that policy, arguing that banning same-sex prom dates violated McMillen's constitutional rights.
Instead, the school board met and issued a statement announcing it wouldn't host the event at Itawamba County Agricultural High School in Fulton, "due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events."
The statement didn't mention McMillen or the ACLU. When asked by The Associated Press if McMillen's demand led to the cancellation, school board attorney Michele Floyd said she could only reference the statement.
"It is our hope that private citizens will organize an event for the juniors and seniors," district officials said in the statement. "However, at this time, we feel that it is in the best interest of the Itawamba County School District, after taking into consideration the education, safety and well being of our students."
Kristy Bennett, legal director for the ACLU of Mississippi, said the district was trying to avoid the issue.
"But that doesn't take away their legal obligations to treat all the students fairly," Bennett said. "On Constance's behalf, this is unfair to her. All she's trying to do is assert her rights."
Itawamba County is a rural area of about 23,000 people in north Mississippi near the Alabama state line. It borders Pontotoc County, Miss., where more than a decade ago school officials were sued in federal court over their practice of student-led intercom prayer and Bible classes.
Anna Watson, a 17-year-old junior at the high school, was looking forward to the prom, especially since the town's only hotspot is the bowling alley, she said.
"I am a little bummed out about it. I guess it's a decision that had to be made. Either way someone was going to get disappointed — either Constance was or we were," Watson said. "I don't agree with homosexuality, but I can't change what another person thinks or does."
Other students are on McMillen's side.
McKenzie Chaney, 16, said she wasn't planning to attend the prom, but "it's kind of ridiculous that they can't let her wear the tuxedo and it all be over with."
A Feb. 5 memo to students laid out the criteria for bringing a date to the prom, and one requirement was that the person must be of the opposite sex.
The ACLU said McMillen approached school officials shortly before the memo went out because she knew same-sex dates had been banned in the past. The ACLU said district officials told McMillen she and her girlfriend wouldn't be allowed to arrive together, that she would not be allowed to wear a tuxedo, and that she and her girlfriend might be asked to leave if their presence made any other students "uncomfortable."
McMillen said she feared she would be thrown out of the prom because "we do live in the Bible Belt."
I don't see how you can blame the girl. The school decided rather than let her show up with another girl, they would cancel it entirely.

I'm shocked that this can happen in Itawamba County.

She ought to get a medal. No prom = less sex that night = less incest that night.
I am betting the school district would have allowed her to bring a female date if the female had been her sister.

Meri, yeah, I recall similar stories each year around prom season of gays/lesbians trying to take a same-sex date to the prom... the outcome is typically somewhat different in each case, though. Last year something like this happened in Tennessee (Chattanooga?) and IIRC at first the girl was told she couldn't attend, but then the school district relented and let her attend.
When I was a kid, there was an openly gay kid in my class, and they let him bring a guy date to the prom without any fuss. Then within a week, a group of football players beat the shit out of him and he had to go to the hospital.

Stupid, but if this incident can be used by Mr Anger to troll in Languish, I can live with it.

I don't see how it's demanding attention. She asked to bring a date of her choice. The school said no. Had they treated her equally this wouldn't have happened.

Man those football players were nasty.
Murdering your granny merely for running an alternative school refuge for HS gays was going
too far.
;)
On a serious note - when I was growing up, gaybashing was not taken seriously here in Toronto by the cops, some of whom still indulged in it themselves (the infamous "Cherry Beach Express", named after a lonely spot some cops would take gays and other undesireables to beat them). Nor would other authority figures prove any more sympathetic. Being gay was something kept firmly in the closet and mostly considered a shameful perversion. If they got beat, that was (seemingly) widely considered the price they paid for being perverts.
This has totally changed over the last 30 odd years. Some cops may still abuse undesireables on the sly (though I sure haven't seen any evidence that this still goes on, or at least, to nearly the same extent), but being gay will most certainly not have one classified as an "undesireable". If that sort of thing happened, there would be widespread public outrage. Few but the exceedingly eccentric, morbidly religious or possibly mentally disturbed think being gay is shameful. "Gay friendly" is a leading official tourist campaign position. Even the leading mayorial candidate is openly gay.

Over here, homosexuals are so ridiculed that they are forced to become heterosexuals. And they begin to hate other homosexuals, sometimes even killing them. So you have dead homosexuals plus locked closet homosexuals = WIN for everyone else.

Not at my high school(s). You had to say how many tickets you wanted ordered, but not who you planned to take. I went to two catholic high schools, and at booth there were openly gay kids (and some not so open lol). They went to proms and no one cares.
Sometimes the squeeky wheel gets the grease, and sometimes it get removed. it's the risk you take. if she had just shown up perhaps the school wouldn't have cared (who knows), but by making an issue of it she forced the school to react. The school didn't pick the best action, of course, but in the end little miss attention screwed everryone over.

What's so great about following the rules? If you live in Mississippi you have to know that the school outright canceling the prom is a possibility over that situation. If she really want to go the prom she'd have done what Alci suggested. Instead she chose to make a social statement. Nothing wrong with that, but lets not pretend that's not what this was.

The chronology in the story isn't totally clear, but is seems that the student approached the school and simply asked if she could bring her date, knowing that it was better to ask (this being Buttfuck, Alabama). The school authorities, in response, circulated a cobbled-together memo of 'official policy' banning gays. The student, rightly pissed, went to the ACLU.

The small point was that if she really wanted to go to the Prom with her date, all they had to do is go separately. As Tim pointed out - there's absolutely nothing wrong with making a social statement, but that's what it is.

I think it's safe to say that any action that involves bringing in the local ACLU chapter is a 'social statement'.
It is unclear whether this is true or not. Apparently she was told when she initially approached them that she could go if they arrived seperately, but that any other student could, at their whim, have them thrown out if they made them "uncomfortable" by their mere presence. Then, *after* this heartening endorsement, the officials published a letter - banning gay dates.
Given that treatment, it is hardly correct I think to unequivocally state "all they had to do is ...". Chances are, if they did that, they'd either be refused admission at the door or be tossed out once there.

I'm not sure what she should have done in your eyes. The way to not get attention is to not follow the rules set down by the school?
What's so great about following the rules? If you live in Mississippi you have to know that the school outright canceling the prom is a possibility over that situation. If she really want to go the prom she'd have done what Alci suggested. Instead she chose to make a social statement. Nothing wrong with that, but lets not pretend that's not what this was.
Wow, exercising a school privilege granted to every other student is a "social statement" ?
Would a white student bringing a black date when all other students have white dates also be a "social statement" ?
Duh.
I should note that when I first read Jaron's statement I thought it said "back when", refering to the 60s. That situation happening today wouldn't be a social statement.

I have to say I have no idea where this whole 'date police' thing comes from. Why would they even have to show up and ask the school district about this? Back in my day you just showed up and nobody cared if you showed up with a date or no. Girls without dates would go together all the time.

They cancelled it because they are bunch of dumbshit homophobes. And since they knew that banning her in particular would not fly (at least not anymore) they decided to be petulant and just ban the entire thing.
That probably would not fly either, but at least they can hold up the fig leaf of claiming they are not a bunch of redkneck, bigotted, assholes - after all, they are saying that *nobody* can go to prom, rather than picking out blac....errrh, gays.
And it is a nice way to punish the fags, by trying to make it all their fault. Of course, what it really does is just make it obvious how ignorant and backward their locality is, but they aren't bright enough to figure that out, so it is ok.

Christ! Totally uncalled for Marty.
Marty doesn't believe in moderation*. Which is why he stepped down as moderator a while back.
*when the issue is in any way related to gays, fags, homos, feet, Lady Gaga, Rufus Painwright, ...
 He just wished AIDS/gaybashing on me. What would be the "called for" response? :D
You're most certaintly a piece of shit and a loser. Most definitely feel like it's 1 me, you 0. Your life sucks, really.

You wished him getting his brains blown out first, and then you made light of the death some poor kid who never did anything to you, jackass.
Yeah marti, your clearly in the wrong here.
And I am generally sympathetic to both poles and lawyers.

Marty could be said to be driven by rage. But in truth it is more just a vague sense ofl upsettedness.
That's far more dangerous. My most towering rages are caused by things like school groups taking up an entire pavement and WALKING SLOWLY (hand-holding couples and the elderly doing the same also attract my ire). Don't even get me started on people who stop at the bottom/top of escalators while they consult their fucking maps :bleeding:

I know EXACTLY what you mean. If you need to have a "walk" and talk to each other while on a busy pathway, then at least have a decency to leave some room for others to overtake you. I usually say "excuse me" pointedly, as I brush past them.
Now that's the people's justice. Being curtly dealt with by an effeminate jew is sure to cause them to rethink their pacing and obstruction of warsaw's homosexual community.

Now apparently there were two proms hosted and she went to the one that only 5 other people showed up to. It is being reported that she was tricked into going to a fake prom. How could she have not known about the other prom...and why didn't she go to it when no one was at the one she was at?
*even I knew that the parents of the other kids were going to hold a prom as it was reported in the news.
Apparently the special ed kids were also sent to the fake prom. Stay classy Mississippi.
Even my small school had more special ed kids than that...

While we lived right near there, my parents didn't believe in private schools (pre-college).
