Title: I feel so European!
Post by: Ed Anger on December 07, 2009, 10:16:08 AM
I'm taking 3 weeks off. With the Christmas week, that makes 4. I'm not going to shower to get the full Euro experience.

:frog: :bowler: :)

November - January is pretty much no go for vacation in our accounting department. At least I'm lucky enough not having to work tomorrow (public holiday) unlike some colleagues. Yankee overlords don't care about foreign holidays when reporting deadlines must be met.

It is actually time for one of those snow days. We tend to get them every 3 years or so, and that's the time I've been here.

On the topic mentioned by Syt, unless the project is really big we also tend to work on our own. During holidays projects are put on hold. Which in practice means you can't go on holidays ever (explaining how I still have days from 2008).
The only exceptions to the one project - one man rule are certain specific tasks in every project done either by me (3D design for GUIs, excel macros, OPC interfacing), by our senior IT guy, or both (SCADA, high-level coding). Which has led to catastrophic results now that said IT guy doesn't feel like working at all anymore, delaying pretty much all projects. I'm trying to get into that void, but the man is not an idiot and won't release his source code.

In capitalist Germany, it's your problem if you don't or can't show up for work because of snow. Your employer either does not need to pay you or you need to work longer or at some other time.

I'm no Euro, but up here people are generally expected to get their asses into work.

Bizarrely though YTG (Yukon Territorial Government) has a policy where they won't send people out of town at temps below -35C or so, whereas us (the Feds) will travel in any weather.  :(

On snow, we generally call it off at about 6-7 inches. Any meaningful ice involved and we call it off too.

However, I generally don't ream out somebody if they can't make it in, as some towns just fucking suck at road clearance. If they call telling us they can't make it that is.

No call, I got to yell.

Question for the Yuros: how does your place of work treat snow days?

I remember just one such day in 27 years. We got to work at 6:45 without excessive difficulties, but the situation became increasingly worrying and we received 'all hands abandon ship' orders at 13:00, i.e. two hours before our usual schedule. It was far too late, we should have left at least one hour before, if not two (a few smart and/or daring fellows actually did so) but our bosses kept expecting orders from the top brass. By 13:00 traffic had collapsed and anyway it wasn't smart to use cars, so we walked on the snow about 30 minutes to reach the nearest railroad station. And it kept snowing, just to make things more interesting.

I couldn't complain, I had warm clothing and good shoes, but some persons used to drive from home to work and back without stepping outside for more than 30 seconds weren't prepared at all, I remember some girls tying plastic bags to their feet (remember this, kids, high heels and snow don't go well together) We were really a motley crew, 'à la Retraite de Moscou'. In fact, and for the whole Russian Campaign experience, I helped push two or three vehicles that had got stuck in a slope and were blocking tens of cars behind them. Luckily, trains still worked, and very efficiently. I reached Atocha station in Madrid packed like a sardine in a can but much sooner than I would have expected.

It does look rather beautiful on the trees, though, especially if it snowed.
But yeah, it is incredibly dangerous, and tends to cause power outages, so not so much fun.

Snow days are only snow days if there's a full storm on, and even then I wouldn't expect to be able to call my boss and complain about there being too much snow to go to work.

It's a preposterous idea, and you weak and decadent americans are that much more ridiculous for it.

You're from frickin' Sweden, of course you can deal with snow.

And Cal, 2 feet of snow in New England is a lot. Most jobs would definitely cancel for the day, and school would probably be out two days.

Generally speaking snow causes England to stop in panicked amazement.  I got a day off work - even though it was only walking distance - because no-one else could get in

Scotland's more hardy and is very good at road clearance.

I think the University of Wyoming had a snow day in 2002?  Right now it is 0f/-18c, about 6 inches of snow, and blowing 10-15 mph. Of course that is no reason to cancel school, even if the interstate is closed.

Day 3: Sorry Euros, I have to shower every day. I feel so icky if I don't. I don't see how you can do it.

Also, with he chill in the air (35F outside), I'm wearing my scarlet Ohio State sweatervest. CALL ME SENATOR.

That last nugget was for Seedy mostly, so he can mock me.

I shower twice a day (well, I take a shower in the morning and a bath in the evening). Don't confuse Europeans with the "French" (see GayFox).

A Bath? Might as well not wash, basking in your own filth :puke:

It's half bad if you do it more often than just Easter and Christmas. And you get to use the water first when you're head of the family.

Baths are for relaxation, not for hygiene.

Like other days.

You know, I thought the shower thing was rather obvious on my part.

NEW ENGLAND:  "Two feet of snow on the ground?  THAT'S TOO GAWDDAMN BAD GET YOAH ASS IN HEAH!"

KENTUCKY: "Two inches of snow on the ground?  OH MAH LORD, CALL OUT THE NATIONAL GUARD!"

We didn't even get half an inch yesterday morning & there were wrecks all over the place.  It's not like we *never* get a decent amount of snow-- people just can't remember how to drive in it.  They're bad enough when it rains.

I like it across the river when it snows. It is like Death Race, without guns.

Err, it's not like I just go into a tub of water and wash away the filth, Wild West style. The purpose of a proper bath is to use oils or salts to purify your pores and relax. And, besides, a short shower always follows afterwards, to wash away the salt/oil and keep the skin fresh. I do not call it a proper shower, though, as it is more rinsing than washing.

I'm so bored. Team Fortress 2 servers are either empty or are filled with nazi euros, TV sucks big time and my kids bug me.

I also don't feel like going out in a 30 mph wind and it being 18 degrees right now.

In Austria 14 salaries are customary (one bonus salary end of May, the other end of November). They are taxed less than the normal salaries. Also, we get between 1 and 1.2 salaries bonus at the end of March from our Yanqi pigdog overlords,
