Johnston watched with cameras from "The Insider" rolling as Palin was interviewed by Winfrey and, says "The Insider" 's Chris Johnson, took exception again and again to things Palin was saying about him:
Palin: (It's) a bit heartbreaking to see the road that he is on right now.
Johnston: I think she's going out and talking and she's just digging a bigger hole for herself.
Palin: (It's) kind of this aspiring -- aspiring porn, some of the things that he's doing -- it's kind of heartbreaking.
Winfrey: The (upcoming) Playgirl centerfold (photo spread)?
Palin: Right. I call that porn. Yes.
Johnston: I just look at her in disgust. ... It's almost funny, that she's like, 46 years old, and she's battling a 19 year old, and I'm winning. And I'm telling the truth. She's lying and losing. ... If you look at her face, she's got -- she's really -- you can tell her mind's going 100 miles an hour when Oprah asked her those Levi questions. ... I've got a lot more knowledge and credibility than she gives me credit for.
Palin: By the way: I don't know if we call him Levi. I hear he goes by the name 'Ricky Hollywood' now, so, if that's the case, we don't wanna mess up this gig he's got going.
Levi: She's really underestimating me right now. And that's not a smart thing to do.
Palin implied Levi's a liar:
Palin: The whole premise of Levi ever having lived with (Palin's daughter) Bristol (the teenage mother of Palin's grandson and Johnston's son) is false. And from there though, you take that foundational untruth, and you can kind of measure all the other things he's saying.
Johnston: She's basically calling me a liar. Which is total bullshit. ... I did -- for a couple of months (live with Bristol). Then we split up and that was it. ... You can totally tell, if you pay attention, that she's the one that's full of shit.
Levi was especially irritated by this moment, Jacobs reports:
Winfrey: What happens when he comes to see the baby?
Palin: He's quite busy with his media tours. And he hasn't seen the baby for a while.
Johnston: I've been gone a lot on the media (tours). ... I haven't seen him a lot, but that's not always why.
Johnston has long contended that the Palins are keeping him away from his now 10-month-old son, and that he's gearing up for a custody battle.
Johnston: When were go into court, all this is gonna be over with, and I won't have much else to say about Sarah Palin, 'cause I will have my kid."
Palin appears to extend an olive branch to Johnston but, observes Jacobs, Johnston says there's no truce yet:
Palin: Open invitation for Levi to come to Aunt Katie's house for Thanksgiving dinner in Washington. There. It's there."
Johnston: (Being sarcastic): That was a real convincing invite. ... I think, if I go there, I'm gonna need an army, 'cause it's not gonna be good."

She just doesn't seem so evil, nor have such outrageous political views, does she? Of course, her being conservative brings out the hate from liberals, and that goes in the opposite way too of course. People may not agree with her views but I don't know if her views are so bad to warrant such hate, so I think it's more perception and personal with people hating on her.

Why can't the media be fascinated by people like Janet Napolitano, Linda Lingle, or Christine Gregoire? The people who talk about this Palin hate the most are conservatives. And in particular Palin. The woman thrives on playing the victim. Everyone is unfair to her (according to her), the Press, the public, Republicans, the Weather Channel, what ever. She just recently posed for some photographs showing off her shapely figure and then claims it's sexist for them to be published. Which is really odd for someone who's speeches are about 30% winks.
I honestly can't think of a liberal icon like Palin. That speaks very poorly for conservatives I think.

Because she ran for VP and they didn't. And I think there's also a certain degree to which people don't realize the impact she had on the country, especially the aging mommy demo and the GOPers who were seriously dissatisfied with McCain. The latter being a very large group along with the former. My own mother called me during that speech of hers at the convention and was all OMG I LUV HER!!!111 WHO IS SHE??!!. :bleeding: Luckily for the country, we quickly realized that she had shot her wad all at once in that speech and there was nothing left for her to make anything of. But, she did give the GOP the only energy they've had in a long time. Fleeting as it was.

Even if it was a sneaky tactical decision on his part that just didn't pay off, this still does show something about his judgement that he would choose a completely moronic bimbo to step in his shoes if he dies (not that unlikely) just to score some cheap publicity.
This decision tainted him as either impossibly stupid or a devious and dishonest politico - neither being the picture that people used to associate with him.
Edit: There is also a third option: he was demoralised, convinced he will lose so he just say "fuck it" and did what his devious Republican advisors told him to do. But again, this shows a flaw in his character, and one inconsistent with the image he used to project.
Let's face it - picking Palin may have been smart or not, politically, but no matter which motivation for that you assume (McCain the Doddering Old Fool; McCain the Manipulative Player; McCain the Broken), it does seriously damage the image he used to have, which is one for being determined, smart, honest and detesting political games.

I think he was the only Republican with a chance to win and I think Sarah Palin killed him. In terms of polling she was kryptonite to independent voters, and they were key to McCain winning.
Well, like I said, in retrospect it's easy to say he should not have picked her. At this point I think he ought to have gone with Pawlenty or Romney.
I think Romney would have just gone longer before making McCain take a nose-dive. Fries may have gotten somewhere with Pawlenty, though.

Yep. He took a shot, and it was a long shot, but there was no real way for him to know what a failure Palin would be.

Agreed on that. His campaign,in my view, didn't do enough diligence on Palin to get past the flash of what she may have accomplished in Alaska vs what she lacked in political polish, presenting her ideas, or having substantive views on some of the important issues. She was not ready for prime time, and I really don't see her going very far in national politics. She may be a mouthpiece for conservatives in some way but that's about it.
I'm convinced that she doesn't have any further political ambitions... but it would be disadvantageous for her to come out and say so because people would pay less attention to her. I'm sure she'd like to be the next Huckabee on Fox--a role for which she'd be pretty well-suited.

Yep. He took a shot, and it was a long shot, but there was no real way for him to know what a failure Palin would be.
Hell, he was running a campaign, it's not like he had 6 weeks to get to know Palin real well or something. He took her at face value, and paid the price. Shrug.
Agreed. At the beginning she had good press. Who knew she could turn out to be the horrible hypothetical of the worst possible pick.

I think Romney would've been a disaster and I'm hugely unimpressed with Pawlenty, I just don't get the appeal. My best picks would have been either Huck or Tom Ridge.

Well, no. But he had only met her for 15 minutes which suggests a lack of due diligence. And my understanding is that campaigns have teams that look into people's lives so that they're prepared for when the opposition starts to dig. It wouldn't have taken long to work out that she wasn't that mavericky and that she hadn't, for example, refused the money for the bridge to nowhere. I'm not so willing to brush off the worst VP pick since Eagleton and the only VP pick (in my opinion) to have significantly influenced the result of an election since LBJ.
If you look at McCain's approval ratings he was very strong and very popular with independents and they - far more than the left where McCain didn't have such great traction - really disliked Palin.
To be honest I think literally any of the other plausible picks would have been better: Pawlenty, Romney, Huck, Ridge. I think even had he chosen Lieberman and sent the right into a tizz it would have had less of an impact on the election than Palin.
The reason isn't necessarily because I think Palin was that bad - I'm one of the few people who still think she could have a very successful political career and (worse) I do sort of like her. But rather I think it's that Palin hit every single one of McCain's strengths and reinforced his weaknesses. She wasn't as mavericky as everyone thought, she wasn't able to speak to independents (in fact they didn't like her at all) and she damaged his position that experience mattered - though I think that was a mistaken campaign to begin with, when people are angry and the choice is change vs experience then change will win every time, I think McCain was really well placed to run a change campaign but he didn't. Her youth also reminded everyone of his age, I heard the phrase 'a heartbeat away from the Presidency' a lot after she was picked which McCain didn't need. I also think the pick did show the potentially negative side of the impulsive, straight-shooting side of his character that was one of his great strengths.
Edit: I suppose what I mean is that I think even last year Palin could have worked as a VP pick, possibly for someone like Romney whose biggest problem is that he doesn't seem remotely authentic or even human (his dad had a similar problem), but that she was really unsuited to the sort of campaign that McCain was running and to McCain himself.

In retrospect I would've preferred Romney (or Pawlenty, for that matter) over McCain as the GOP candidate.

McCain was fine as a senator before his Presidential aspirations took hold, and I think he is one of the last voices of semi-moderation left in the Republican party today.
With that said, I'm glad he doesn't have any meaningful executive power.

I don't see that. Huckabee comes off as someone who can always say something and move the conversation along, which is a key skill for his new job. Palin, not so much.
