I'm doing some picking with the spread for Yi.  The bold will win the game, and I'll discuss the spread in my notes, where it is necessary.

Sunday:
Panthers (-6) - Falcons - Delhomme can't play any worse, and I expect some improvement.  Still, the Falcons should beat the spread.  Ryan is doing well, Turner is a burner, and their D is for real.

Vikings - Lions (-9.5) - Peterson might rush for 300, and the Vikings D will mash the Lions' terrible offensive line.  The Vikings should win by at least 10.

Bengals (-9) - Packers - The Bengals might get shut out.  The Packers will score a couple of times.

Cardinals (-3) - Jaguars - The Cardinals are decent at stopping the run, and that's all the Jaguars have.

Raiders (-3) - Chiefs - This is a tough one.  Both teams played well against very tough opposition in Week 1, but I take the Raiders.  The Chiefs run game is weak (due to their line and the possibility that LJ is used up), which puts it on the QB.  With Seymour and Asamugha, the Raiders are solid against the pass.  This will be close, but the Raiders should win.

Patriots - Jets (-3.5) - Sanchez is a flake, but the Patriots almost gave it up to the fucking Bills, of all people.  Expect a big game from Leon Washington  I want to see Jim Leonhard lodged in Tom Brady's spine.

Saints - Eagles (-1) - Kevin Kolb?  Be fucked.  Be very fucked.  Sure, the Eagles have a D, while the Saints have a series of tackling dummies that they set up in the defensive backfield, but Kevin fucking Kolb.  Brees might not throw for six, but he can beat the spread on this one.

Texans (-6.5) - Titans - Expect the Texans to beat the spread on the low-octane Titans offence.  AFC South games are always close, and the Texans are better than last week's shitfest showed.  The Titans should still handle them.

Rams (-9.5) - Redskins - There is nothing redeeming about the Rams, at least until Bulger gets hurt and the Great One takes over under centre.  The Redskins should win by at least two TDs.

Buccaneers (-4.5) - Bills - TO should get some points here.  I'm feeling a bit better about the Bills after seeing how they used their running back against the Patriots.  The Bucs are in disarray.

Seahawks (-1) - 49ers - This is a tough one.  The Seahawks are on a downward slope, while the Niners seem to be getting it right.  Ultimately, I go with the Seahawks because I feel that their QB gives them the best chance to win.

Steelers - Bears (-3) - Urlacher is a bigger loss than Polamalu.  The Steelers D is still fundamentally sound.  Jay Cutler remains shitty.  Throwing picks against the Steelers won't just get you beat, it'll get you annihilated unless your D can hang with theirs.  Chicago's D just isn't in that class.  Roethlisberger can make the throws to beat the spread, even if the Steeler's running game has disappeared.

Browns (-3) - Broncos - How are the Browns the underdog in this one?  They played alright against a first-rate D, while the Broncos won on a miracle play by one of the all-time clutch players in the league against the lowly Bengals.  And the Broncos don't have an Adrian Peterson to shred a run D.

Ravens (-3) - Chargers - Without their centre, the Chargers are going to have a hell of a time running the ball and organizing their pass protection, two things that the Ravens make difficult to start with.  Expect to see a little more run from the Ravens than we did last week, but still big plays from Todd Heap, who nobody on the Chargers can cover.

Giants (-3) - Cowboys - I'm taking the Giant pass rush over the Cowboy passing game.  Everybody is going crazy over the Cowboys after their lambasting of the hapless Bucs, but I remain unconvinced.

Monday:
Colts - Dolphins (-3) - I don't know about the Colts line, and I definitely don't know about their D and their WRs.  However, what I do know is that Peyton Manning is the best QB of this generation, and he does well in prime time.  However, I think that the Dolphins will beat the spread.

You misspelled Center and I think the Colts cover the spread.

Besides that your picks and analysis seem pretty solid (or al least along the same lines as mine).  The only other game I could argue would be the Pats/Jets game, but taking the home team in a game this close, this early is reasonable.  I could see the Pats or Jets either make a deep play-off run, or end up with 5-6 wins.  Neither result would surprise me from either team.

I assume a negative number means that team is taking the points?  I have a hard time seeing the Bears giving three points to the Steelers.

I put the minus next to the team that was the underdog.  I don't know if that's how it works, but that's how I did it.

I just found out I can get the NFL RedZone channel on my verizon Fios TV package for $50.  Thank God, because the Portland TV affiliates seem to have lost it.  It has been bad enough to be force fed the SeaChickens from up north every week by the Fox affiliate, but now the CBS affiliate has decided to broadcast the Packers/Bengals game tomorrow.

Are you kidding me?  Why in the hell would they show the worst match-up possible when they could show the Jets/Pats game instead.

It is because of their shitty QB.  I swear to God watching Jason Campbell screw around is just painful.  That play where he looked like he was running for a first down and then inexplicably threw the ball three yards past the LOS just about made me pass out with fury.

Damn, the Chargers are the walking dead.

QuoteNose tackle Jamal Williams was placed on injured reserve Saturday, which means the San Diego Chargers will be without two starting defensive linemen against the Ravens.

Williams suffered an elbow injury during Monday night's victory over the Oakland Raiders and had been listed as questionable on the team's injury report.

The move ends Williams' season.

He will join defensive end Travis Johnson (groin) on the sideline, leaving San Diego with only one defensive tackle (Ogemdi Nwagbuo).
Title: Re: NFL Week 2 Thread
Post by: Neil on September 20, 2009, 06:31:09 AM
Oh shit.  The Chargers are in a bad way now.  Williams was a destroying machine.  He could beat double blocks in pass rush, and he could devour space in the running game.

Unless Rivers pulls a Manning, this is going to be a long afternoon for the Chargers, and Rivers' punchable face is going to be very sad at the end of the day.

Well, don't get too upset if they start targeting the DBs, because I don't think the Bolts are going to be able to run successfully.
Expect a shitload of screens and flats to Sproles, with the occasional trap and draw, and Rivers to have more than 40 attempts passing.

Yeah, I know but thanks.  I had the Sunday Ticket the last few years and watched the RedZone channel a bit there too.

I ordered it this morning, anything is better than being force fed the Seahawks and the crappy CBS game of the week every Sunday.

Uh...defense is somewhat optional in Nashville today.

Also I love all the flak those refs took for that call in the Raiders game, because Jacoby Jones just blatantly dropped the ball in the endzone and they gave him the TD anyway.    :D

Edit:  And just as Schaub goes over 220 yards (3tds), with the protection looking good, etc, an OL goes down and isn't getting up.  Super.

Edit2:  Oh it's Chester Pitts.  Fuck.

  I love reading the gameday threads over on the Texans board.  Every time the opposing team scores a TD to go ahead, it's "GAME OVER MAN! GAME OVER! WE LOSE"  and "FIRE KUBIAK HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE'S DOING" type stuff.  When they take the lead or make a big play or something, they're the greatest goddamn NFL team to ever play the game.  There's no middle ground at all.

I'm surprised the number of suicides doesn't spike in the Houston area every Sunday with these mooks.

Edit:  31 - 31  4 TDs and 300something yards for Schaub now.

I still have Peyton Manning to play Monday night, but 25 points from a QB is probably too much to ask. :(

Hey Neil...Ray Ray on that game-saving play.

QuoteRavens middle linebacker Ray Lewis made the game's biggest play by tackling running back Darren Sproles in the backfield for a 5-yard loss on a fourth and two at the Ravens' 15 late in the game, but he gets an assist from Chargers head coach Norv Turner.

"They stayed true to what they had been doing on film," Lewis said. "Whenever they are in that formation, he goes downhill, and I just shot the gap. I took a risk, and I've told my teammates sometimes you have to take a risk."

But how do you not block No. 52? How do you not have someone assigned to him on every running play? More importantly, the Chargers had been toasting the Ravens cornerbacks all game, why run instead of pass especially when San Diego had height advantages with their receivers against most of the Ravens cornerbacks?

Lewis just smiled.

"I don't know what went into their decision making," Lewis said.

Obviously, Ray Ray stayed up and watched last Monday Night's game with the Raiders, because they tried the exact same shit at the end of the game.

Ergo...NORVED.

They're not the worst team in history, if that's what you mean.  They probably looks good today because they were playing the hapless Bucs.  They've done a good job rebuilding their line, their defense is moderately sturdy, their backs are good and their receivers great.  Edwards is a very average QB.  However, just like the team that won against the Bucs the week before, the coaching is a liability.  Jauron and Phillips are two of a retarded kind.  Both are worse than Norv Turner.

What's this story?

Not much to it, really.  Finnegan got into a...scuffle...on the sidelines that ended up involving just about everyone on the Texans sidelines and most of the guys who were on the field at the time, and some Tennessee fans were squealing about his face getting smashed into the bench by someone, but fuck him.  He deserves it for the amount of shit he talks and starts.  One Titans player (not Finnegan) was ejected, a Texans WR got a 15 yard personal foul.  Don't know about fines or suspensions yet.

There was a lot going on in that game.  Finnegan, who (and it can't be said enough) is a total douche, and Andre Johnson were getting in each others faces, with Johnson mostly laughing at him while he got utterly toasted by Houston WRs all day.  Finnegan later figured out that the only way he was going to stop Johnson was to just jump on his back before the ball got there.  Texans RT Eric Winston and Kyle Vanden Bosch, complete with his toolish red contacts, were screaming at each other enough that the refs walked them both to opposite sides of the field, etcetc.  Good stuff.

Oh and Jacoby Jones has the Texans logo shaved into the side of his head, which is awesome.

Yeah...he's constantly running his mouth.

I still haven't figured out how that dude made the Pro Bowl.  I mean...sure...he plays against Jacksonville twice a year, so those are some wideouts he can "shut down," but the Colts with Harrison/Wayne and the Texans with Johnson also play them twice a year, and neither one of them seem to have problems throwing at him (even when he's covering a guy like Jacoby Jones, instead of the #1).  You mention Mason lighting him up, and I know I've seen him get blown away by other guys as well.  They call him "Cortland Burnedagain," or something of that nature, for christs sake.

Just subtract the spread from the favorite's total score.

The Giants were giving 3 to the Cowboys.  They won by 2.  Subtract the spread, they ended up losing against the spread.  The Cowboys lost the game and covered the spread, the Giants won and didn't cover.

The Colts were giving 3 to the Dolphins.  They won by 4.  Subtract 3 from the Colts, they still win so they covered the spread.

On Sunday night, Henson fired off many tweets at fans who booed the Redskins during their 9-7 win over the Rams. Henson called the fans "dimwits" and asked how people who "work 9 to 5 at McDonald's" could know what's best for the team.

It is still pretty early, probably too early to have this discussion, but I am pretty impressed with Flacco.  I was expecting a sophomore slump from him, not sure why, it was just a feeling.  He has been very impressive so far though.

Flacco is rock solid-- I've been telling you guys this since 2006 :P

lol, Go Redskins.

They are a team of destiny.

Destined for a top draft pick.

Destined to stop Detroit's losing streak at 19; I hope.

I feel bad for Jim Zorn in all this.

Why?  He is supposed to be an offensive guy and his offense sucks ass.
Plenty NFL head coaches end up being the opposite kind of guys that they're supposed to be.  Zorn's team doesn't really have much talent on the offence, which is the heart of the problem.  The line is lackluster and injury-prone, which causes everything else to fail.  Portis is wearing down and was never really as good as some people thought he was.  Campbell's development as a quarterback seems to be stuck at around the second year.  The receivers are a collection of guys who were #2 or #3 on other teams.  Sellers is serviceable in his role, but not much of a threat.  Although Chris Cooley is a genuine standout as a tight end, he's not going to put the team on his back.

I have a hard time nailing Zorn's hide the wall when his team is playing in what is perhaps the most competitive division in the NFL and his offensive larder is mostly empty.  They went and spent two hundred million on defensive players, but if the Redskins had a decent line and a Chad Pennington at QB (which is what it looked like Campbell might be, the one year he played well), they'd be a much better team.

I heard today that this is the first time that Jason Campbell has played in the same offense, for the same coordinator for two straight years, since high school.

I would like to see what the kid could do if he could actually just go out and run an offense he really knows, without having to spend so much time on the field thinking about what he is supposed to be doing.  Not very likely with Mr. Synder running the show though.  I imagine he will fire Zorn if/when they don't make the play-offs again this year.

Zorn's going to be lucky to make it to midseason.  Snyder's licking his chops at the thought of an uncapped season.  Expect to see some flash-in-the-pan from this year get offered a 300 million dollar contract, and the Redskins to go 4-12.

My problem with Campbell is not his skills per se.  He can read defenses and has good physical abilities.  What drives me nuts about the guy is his poor vision, his poor instincts, his poor awareness of where he is on the field.  He just doesn't have it, he makes drive killing bone headed mistakes all the time.  That has basically been my take on the guy all along and it is why he never seems to get better.  Watch a Redskins game sometime and just look at him run directly into the rush, pass when he has room to run, try to run when there are no lanes, etc...

I just think he just doesn't see the field and understand situations very well on the fly.

Well I hope not.  Snyder has got to stick with Zorn, Snyder has done a decent job upgrading the defense this year now he has to focus on bringing in some decent people in on the offense.

As far as the overpaying for flash in the pan guys...who are you thinking of?  That is what he did back in the Bruce Smith/Deion Sanders days he seems to at least bring in contributers now.  He just needs more.  It is not like the guys who are underachieving on offense are highly paid free agents God knows.  It seems to me you are going more on his reputation than really how has run the Redskins lately.

Alright I understand where you are coming from now.  You think he is in danger of being fired this year and yes if he does get fired this year I would feel sorry for him.

I thought you were feeling sorry for him since his team is not very good.

Chester Pitts, a guy who has started every game the Texans have ever played at guard, and who is only one of two original players on the roster (the kicker Kris Brown is the other one) is done for the season.  You might remember him as the guy Ephraim Salaam "found" bagging groceries in a supermarket in San Diego.  He has already had two "major" surgeries on the knee he injured in the game against the Titans, and is already on IR.  What really sucks is that he's a free agent after this season, so....he might be completely finished because of this.

Hope Studdard really is ready to go.  He was kinda all over the place against the Titans.  His first play, he totally blew the Tennessee guy opposite him away.  The next, that same guy was throwing Studdard to the ground and stepping on his head (not literally, but close).

In related news, the Texans signed the guy who took out Tom Brady's knee (Bernard Pollard, S) to fill that roster spot.

Well, if the Broncos can carve them up, the Ravens should be able to do even better.

Their only hope is to play Derek Anderson.  Unfortunately for the Browns, Anderson didn't go to Notre Dame, doesn't test well on Madison Avenue and is thus not likely to be the face of a franchise.  In the meantime, they'll continue to get demolished by their two great division rivals (if you can call what they do to the Browns 'rivalry'), one of which is led by a QB who looks like he's retarded and the other of whom has a noticeable unibrow.

lolno.  I'll stick with the Philly D, thank you very much.  They don't play NO every week.

I realized I went way too early in the draft to pick up a backup QB, so Flacco's too good to sit on my bench for almost the entire season, especially when he's generating more points than some starters for other teams.  But I realize that nobody is going to give me their #1 RB either.  But when I am thinking is fair is someone that coud fit into my lineup as a #2, or in a flex position.  If someone wants to make it a 4-player deal, where they also trade me a backup QB, and I throw in a backup RB, I'd consider that too.

I'll take a look at your roster tonight and make you a trade offer.
