Didn't see that one coming.
One brother was unusual but ok.  It happens.
But both?

Yes.  It has also been known that they directed exactly one decent movie and have been getting gigs based on that ever since.  Their writing has occasionally risen to the mediocre, but they can't direct for fuck.

Larry/Lana's "gender non-conformity" had been rumoured for years before it became public.

This is the first I've ever heard of Andy/Lilly's transitioning.

I've had trans criminal defense clients.

But I thought the Wachowskis were engaged in a bit of a more convoluted and dramatic process, hence nonconformity, rather than merely adopting another (the other?) gender.  But I haven't been following it, so you may well be more accurate.

And certainly more "PC"; need to keep the job in NDP Alberta and J. Trudeau Canadia, of course... :P

I gotta, say, while I will probably never emigrate out of Poland, I used to think that if I ever do, Canada would be preferable to the US. I don't think so anymore. I think it has gone too far into the PC territory, even for my tastes. Give me the US any time of the day instead. It seems a much more free place to live.

I don't know where you get that from.

Certainly in my particular job it is fairly important to be "politically correct".  But I imagine that is true for public servants anywhere.  But I don't think that applies to society at large.

Sure, but you have to accept the rules of the universe it exists in. Once you do that, the sequels are decent fun too.

Disagree.

The Matrix had a goofy, but simple premise.  The sequels however screwed up that simple premise by making it now-unintelligible.

I don't think that you have to completely eschew silliness to have a decent movie.  The first movie was (wait for it...) original, while the sequels were not.  I reject the idea that, if one disliked the sequels, one had to dislike the original.

Again, you are entitled to your opinion, but the sequels were wretched not, IMO, because their stories were so bad (and they were pretty bad), but because the direction was so awful.  Actors who were good in the first film were either flat or over-the-top in the sequels.  The timing was off (scenes lasted WAYY too long in many cases) in the sequels  and it made the story (if there was one) not only unintelligible, but too painful to wait for.  i never finished the third movie, and i own the DVDs.

Yeah, but I had a problem with that in the first movie, too.  Specifically, the part about if you died in the Matrix, you died for real.  Sure, that made sense for people who hadn't been freed from the Matrix, but if you were out of the Matrix and went back in on a mission, you had been trained to know that the Matrix wasn't real--that's why you could do all the bullet time stuff.  But if you know it's not real, it seems to me that dying there would be sort of like your character dying in a CRPG--it might kind of suck, but you know it didn't actually happen.

Of course, on a meta level, you kind of need that--otherwise, there's no risk to the heroes while they're in the Matrix.  Well, other than the traitor who's murdering their bodies while their minds are in the Matrix, but that's different from the Agents actually being a direct threat.

My one significant beef with the Matrixverse was the First Law of Thermodynamics.  There was no new energy going into the power supply, and plenty being consumed by body function.

Yeah, that could be explained away easily enough - it's such a shock to the system that your brain thinks you're dead, and therefore you are.

Yi's point about thermodynamics is better, but it's essential to the overall theme of the movie so you just have to roll with it.

About Cloud Atlas, I thought it was a mess. I think the way the filmmakers disassembled the book's original structure in order to create a traditional film structure and manufacture climaxes and payoffs actually made the film more confusing and less satisfying than the book.

The Wachowskis also have the subtlety of an elephant stampede, although they aren't helped by the massive amplitude of the story they have to tell here. Even with a 3 hour running time a lot of parts feel rushed.

However, as it usually happens with failed adaptations of great material, it still merits watching.

Also, regarding the Matrix films, the first one is the most classic hero story you could imagine (and very well realized on that regard), all the mumbo jumbo is just cool window dressing. Here's this guy, with a mundane life, weird dude comes and tells him he has powers, at first he's crap at using those powers, then he embraces his true destiny and becomes good at those powers and beats the bad dudes and saves the good dudes. The end.

In the following ones, the problem is that the mumbo jumbo took over.

You just have to write that off as bad storytelling.  Better writers would have come up with a better motive for the aliens to be doing their thing, but the writing for the Matrix was good enough to make the movie enjoyable.  What they did to V for Vendetta was far worse.

maybe the second brother did it for artistic purposes

@matrix: for the sequels, I don't remember being turned off by anything ridiculous. was more poor execution/ideas for some of those scenes. some characters were lacking, too. maybe it had to do with screen time. original matrix is somewhat narrow in scope; it's the sequels that got "epic" in a really shitty/bad way.

Yeah, that could be explained away easily enough - it's such a shock to the system that your brain thinks you're dead, and therefore you are.

Yi's point about thermodynamics is better, but it's essential to the overall theme of the movie so you just have to roll with it.

I don't disagree on an intellectual level, but watching the movie at the time, the death thing just took me out of it.

Yeah I thought the Matrix was pretty cingeworthy. I admit to even being somewhat relieved the sequels destroyed its cult status...which was petty of me I admit.

Cult status? It was a box office hit and remains renowned as one of the greatest science fiction films ever made.

Um, he has a point.  It was a huge hit and is still well-regarded (87% fresh on rottentomatoes).

I'm not going to spend a ton of time on this, but the first listing of "100 greatest science fiction movies ever" on google has The Matrix at #13.

The Matrix was good fun.

Sure, but you have to accept the rules of the universe it exists in. Once you do that, the sequels are decent fun too.

That "battery" business? I don't think it's essential at all. The actual reason people were held in the matrix could be totally different, without changing the movie much.

For example, I always thought a better explanation was that the machines found human unconscious minds capable of certain types of lateral thinking that the machines realized they lacked, and so the machines were keeping a network of human brains alive as a giant brain bank - keeping their conscious minds occupied with the Matrix, while they plundered the unconscious for their own inscrutable purposes.

Well, the T2 rating is obviously wrong, but I'd put it ahead of Moon and CoM.  Moon was just okay, and CoM was just unwatchable.

One problem with The Matrix as a "great SF movie' is that it doesn't have anything to make you want to watch it again.  You pretty much see everything there is to see when watching it the first time, and a second viewing would be dominated by the fact that the big reveal is already known.  Absent the wow factor of the big reveal, what is there to recommend the movie?

Children of Men was dreadful. I don't know why that would make any list of top sci-fi. Critics who liked that (of which there seem to be many) are cray.

I've seen The Matrix multiple times.  It stands up well to repeated viewing.

Yes, on first viewing it's mostly about the big reveal.  But what else is there to recommend?  It's a damn good looking movie.  The sets and costumes, the action sequences (bullet time!), great performances by Fishburne and Huge Weaving (and Keanu Reeves fairly wooden acting actually works for him in The Matrix, though everyone else is bland to terrible).  The movie is also jam-packed with a lot of allegory (I totally missed the Neo as Christ the first time around, though it seems pretty obvious now).

I've seen it twice, and was bored to tears the second time.  All of the pretentiousness of the movie comes out the second time.  The allegories to Gnosticism and the Hindu belief in the unreality of the world are cute, but, I thought, obvious the first time.  I agree that the movie looks good, but that is not improved, I don't think, by repeated viewings... one starts to see the flaws the second time around.

I will grant that some people may find repeated watching worthwhile, just as people find repeated readings of Ulysses worthwhile.  I'm not one of them.

I can watch T2 multiple times because the score is so brilliant and the action scenes so well done.  That movie's action scenes make those of The Matrix pretty tame, and Insane Linda Hamilton is fun every time.

It's been 25 years, and with all the FX and camera tech advancements, the entire last act of T2 is still one of the best rides you can watch in film.

Man, you know I couldn't watch The Matrix on the big screen when it came out, the lines were out the door.  (Went for The Passion of the Christ, instead, you know -- just me and my two pals, and a minivan-load of five or six nuns, that's it.)

But because of this thread, I'm going to really watch it.  I've seen nasty bits of "plastic surgery disasters" with suction cups being pulled off while Morgan Freeman does Morgan Freeman, but I ought to really see the film.
