I thought about making a US/non-US split, but I didn't want to inflate the options even more. :P

Me: Not religious, not attending services.

Not religious, but I have attended weddings/funerals for people which are.

Last time I attended church outside of that was when my mother took me to Christmas Mass when I was a teenager. God was that boring.

No. No.

The most common reason for me to visit churches is tourism, though of course the occasional funeral or wedding is unavoidable.

I'm not religious but I attend weddings, christenings and funerals I'm invited to and occasionally the odd sing-along carol concert.

Not religious and do not attend religious services.  But my old school was a religious school and every student had to attend morning assemblies.  We sang a hymn every day and recited the Lord's prayer.  Also did church services twice every year, just before Christmas and Easter.  The majority of students and teachers were atheists but everybody went along.

Atheist here. Answered that I do not attend services, but I might, perhaps, do it *very* occasionally just out of curiosity. For example, a few years ago I was in Rome and attended a Catholic Mass in St. Peter's just because I happened to be there at the time. I've also attended a couple of Jewish ceremonies in the local synagogue.

I'm a nominal Lutheran at best and I gladly attend all the usual weddings, christenings, confirmations and funerals I'm invited to.

I've long since hunted down and murdered any edgelord Internet atheist tendencies with regard to my church attendance.

I used to attend when I was young but I don't attend services nowadays. There are barely any weddings in my family (when it happens it is mostly civil marriage) and funerals are most often not celebrated at church.

That's pretty much the same as my school. Though I did have additional obligations due to singing in the choir.

Not religious. Weddings and funerals. I used to go to the Holy Eve mass as there was organ music and the boys choir to listen to and sing along. That gave a festive mood, but somehow we did not go in the last few years.

Not religious, no.  I'm not particularly opposed to going for things like weddings or funerals, but the majority of the ones I attend are either non-religious or only tangentially religious (as in, say, a token religious officiant offering a prayer or two as part of a vastly secular ceremony).

Parents brought me constantly as a kid, but I don't go now. I don't get anything out of it. Some people like the group dynamic, and that's fine for them I guess. Plus, you can tell they tailor the services toward a particular demographic for business reasons and I am not in that demo.

Once in a great while, usually on vacation, I find an empty catholic church with the doors open and sit in there for a while. I like that about the papists. Our churches lock the door as soon as service is over.

Oh this is funny: The last church service I attended was while visiting my sis in law in Phoenix. It's a huge church with five or so different campuses. One pastor. We went to the place, a huge auditorium with adjacent event facilities, playgrounds and whatnot. Maybe a school. They had their own bands and everything, but when it came time to hear the sermon, the dude came up on a screen.

He was preaching his sermon to all the campuses via videoconference. I don't think he was actually at any of them. I asked my sis why she needs to go to church when you can just log in to the webcam and hear the service. "For the experience." The audience was 85% female. So I guess if you're a single religious dude there could be a point to it.

Though I have to say religion is partially a social experience. For some reason it is more intense when you are part of a mob. Burning heretics alone is just not the same.

Not religious and do not attend, though I actually do like going to certain types of religious services... I've enjoyed Unitarian services, Catholic services, Quaker services, and Jewish services.  I also used to like to go to Lutheran services when my grandfather would conduct them in German.

There is a reason there is one letter difference between reason and treason.

And a one letter difference between reason and former New England Patriots Super Bowl QB Tony Eason...

So a one letter difference between Eason and reason, and treason and reason...This links Eason to treason, with the connecting point of reason...You don't have to be Dan Brown to see the hidden message that the only "reasonable" explanation for this "coincidence" is that Eason was a leading edge of a treasonous plot by the Patriots to undermine America--the "Patriot" name likely chosen ironically.

Tom Brady, with his deflated balls, Ugg endorsements, and foreign born wife, is attempting to subvert our values.  :hmm:

I read a credible explanation by a statistic specialist the other day that suggests it is entirely possible it wasn't deflated on purpose, given the differences observed and previous fluctuations due to outside temperature and low sample of the other team's balls.

The peer pressure for attending Sunday School when I was a kid was truly obnoxious (me and brother didn't attend, but most of our friends did), and probably a contributor for my general distaste of religion when I grew up. God (pun intended) has this country changed for good.

As some of you know I have mellowed out greatly about religion lately and generally think that people who get something good out of religion should not be discouraged from worship and living according with its tenets - as long as they do not try to impose their religious commandments on others.

But "teaching" religion to kids is where I draw the line - like sex and drugs, religion should be something that is done between consenting adults.

You might want to ask what I teach the kids before you burst a spleen. :)

My church is Unitarian Universalist, which is a humanist church. Our class is called "Coming of Age". We're providing a safe space for these middle schoolers to explore their own belief systems, morals, ethics, question what they've been taught, and to come up with their own statement of belief.

There's a Afro-Carribbean church at the bottom of my road. Folk come in for miles to it. As far as I know it's 100% black. I'd actually like to go but I'm pretty sure that the services are 2 hours+ long.

Never been to a "hugging church".

Jewish religious services are very tedious, I found. And very lengthy. Much of the service is devoted to ritual praises of God in Hebrew - though on Yom Kippur, the most significant prayer is in Aramaic - which no-one but serious scholars speaks!

Yeah, but when you are just watching it that doesn't affect the viewer.  I found the singing during the service quite beautiful.  And when you watch in Assisi you get a number of Masses to choose from during the day as various religious tour groups come in.  I sat there for hours listening to Mass being said, and sung, in a variety of languages.

Rituals have meaning. They have always had meaning. Being involved with a group of like-minded people who choose to share a ritual - whether god-oriented or not - often brings a feeling of peace and camaraderie.

For some, it's going to a church on Sundays (or Saturdays in a synagogue, or during a full moon in a forest); for others is Sunday football, or RPG Saturdays, or whatever.

Hmm, I really think I've only attended one genuine -- not counting weddings, funerals, or bar/bat mitzvahs -- religious service, a Christmas Eve mass my step-grandfather took me to when I was a kid.  I was brought up to the communion line, but I had to cross my arms over my chest as a non-baptized.

But oddly enough, I might go to a Compline at the big Episcopalian cathedral in town this Sunday night, although that's also a choir concert.

They can hear it if it's silent though aspirated ;) cf. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspirated_h (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspirated_h)  :smarty:
QuoteIn French spelling, aspirated "h" (French: "h" aspiré) is an initial silent letter "h" that represents a hiatus at a word boundary, in this case between the word in question's first vowel and the preceding word's last vowel. At the same time, the aspirated "h" blocks the normally expected processes of contraction and liaison from occurring.[1] The name of this now silent "h" refers not to aspiration but to its former pronunciation as the voiceless glottal fricative [h] in Old French and in Middle French.

Not that Le Renard Gris is a Frenchie or even knows and uses the rule.  :P

I've visited a lot of churches as I'm into history and architecture.
Going to actual services?....most of it was when  I was a kid so off the top of my head:
1x with the cub scouts.
2-3 (?) times with school.
1-2 weddings.
1-2 christenings.
1-2 random occasions where I did for some reason.

It helps that pretty much nobody gets married in churches anymore and I don't go to funerals.
