Given that this kind of stuff is seeming to be a common occurance anymore, I thought that I'd start a thread as a place to put them all. It'll be fun to see it all together. :)
And to start us off...
Quote"We're not going to be disrespected," Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-Ind.) told The Washington Examiner. "We have to get something out of this. And I don't know what that even is."
Quote"How do you look at them and... deny them access?" said Neugebauer. He, with most House Republicans, had voted early Sunday morning to pass a funding measure that would delay the Affordable Care Act, a vote that set up a showdown with the Senate and President Barack Obama. With the parties unable to agree on how to fund the federal government, non-essential government functions shut down Tuesday.
"It's difficult," responded the Park Service employee.
"Well, it should be difficult," replied the congressman.
"It is difficult," responded the Park Service employee. "I'm sorry, sir."
"The Park Service should be ashamed of themselves," the congressman said.

I far shorter and tidier thread would be, "Astute policies enacted by politicians during the last quarter century".
Some reporter asked Harry Reid if he would at least agree to fund cancer treatment for kids during the shutdown. His response was: "Why would we want to do that?"
What a Marti-like thread.
QuotePennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett is a Republican facing a stiff challenge from Democrats in next year's election. He recently sat down on the set of CBS 21 News in Harrisburg for a segment on marriage equality, a hot-button issue in the Keystone State and one currently winding its way through the court system.
The anchor, Sherry Christian, opened by asking Corbett about a controversial statement his lawyers made in a summer court filing comparing the marriage of a gay couple to the marriage of a pair of 12-year-old children. The Republican had previously rejected the analogy, so this was something of a softball, an easy way for Corbett to reset the conversation and attempt to make his case with slightly less incendiary language.
"It was an inappropriate analogy," Corbett responded. So far, so good. But, as you've no doubt guessed by now, he didn't stop there. "I think a much better analogy," he continued, "would have been brother and sister, don't you?" A clearly flustered Christian's response: "I'm gonna leave the comments to you and your team."

Hmmm. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/10/02/why-would-want-to-do-that/
QuoteBut Reid was challenged at a Democratic press conference by CNN's Dana Bash about why the Senate wouldn't consider the NIH bill.
"If you can help one child who has cancer, why wouldn't you do it?" she asked.
Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., quietly asked, "Why pit one against the other?"
And Reid immediately chimed in: "Why would we want to do that? I have 1,100 people at Nellis Air Force base that are sitting home. They have a few problems of their own."
Seems you left a part out.
The wonderful Dame Tessa Jowell: ''I think Ed [Miliband] should just go on travelling around the country, exposing himself to many people.'
Not to forget Godfrey Bloom MEP, the man so politically incorrect UKIP disowned him:
'I just don't think [women] clean behind the fridge enough.'
On the prostitutes he's admitted using, 'Terrified young women beaten into prostitution often from Eastern Europe... is only a very small aspect of the flesh trade ... In short, most girls do it because they want to.'
To women in a room who said that they didn't clean behind the fridge, 'you're all sluts! It's a room of sluts!' He later clarified he meant slatternly.
He currently sits on the European Parliament's Women's Rights and Gender Equality Committee.
Also when asked by a journalist why there were only white people on the front page of the UKIP conference guide he exclaimed 'You racist! What a racist thing to say!' before hitting journalist, lightly, with the conference guide.
He sounds great.

QuoteA North Carolina Republican official has been fired from the state party executive board following an appearance on The Daily Show in which he boasted about the implications of the widely-criticized voting law recently enacted by the GOP-heavy state legislature, but he refuses to apologize for his remarks.
"There's nothing I said that I would take back. So be it," state GOP executive committee member Don Yelton said in an interview with the Asheville Citizen-Times published on Thursday. "The activity going on across the state today proves what I said is true. The Democrats are jumping on it like flies after honey."
In the interview, which aired Wednesday night, Yelton tells Daily Show correspondent Aasif Mandvi that the new voting law, which mandates voter identifications, the curtailing of early voting operations and does not allow college students to vote using their school ID, "is going to kick the Democrats in the butt." He also dismisses concerns that the law will particularly affect communities of color by saying, "If it hurts a bunch of lazy Blacks that want the government to give them everything, so be it."

Obama:
1) Carried out military interventionism in Libya without Congressional approval
2) Gave a no-bid contract to Halliburton – just like Bush did
3) Has an administration full of lobbyists, after promising he wouldn't have any
4) Has close ties to Wall St., but pretends to support Occupy Wall St.
5) Broke his promise to close Guantanamo Bay
6) Supported the $700 billion TARP corporate-welfare bailout just like Bush
7) Waged the biggest war against medical marijuana of any president, which was the opposite of what he had promised
8) Nominated a six-time tax cheater to head the government agency that enforces the tax laws
9) Gave tax dollars to AIG executives, then pretended to be outraged about it
12) Increased the national debt more in one term than Bush did in two
17) Ordered private company to fire 1,000 employees
In 2011, after Boeing had hired 1,000 new employees to work at its new factory in South Carolina, the Obama administration ordered Boeing to shut down the factory, because the factory was non-union.
18) Stole money from retired teachers and police officers
19) Supported release of convicted mass murderer
In 2010, Obama supported releasing Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi (who had been convicted of murdering 270 people) from prison.
20) Illegally put thousands of guns into hands of criminals
In Operation Fast and Furious, the Obama administration ordered gun storeowners to illegally sell thousands of guns to criminals.

I think Obama's gaffe is getting a lot of mileage mostly because we're in a down news cycle and because it's amplified by the Obamacare.gov fuckup.
The actual number of health plans that his original statement doesn't apply to is pretty small.

The radio (NPR). Actually I think that was just the number of people who bought their own policies prior to Obamacare. Something like half to 75% of them may lose their policies.

On the one hand 8 million people is rounding error, on the other it's too big to sweep under the political rug.

They may lose the policies that they have now, but will get something similar, is my understanding. And most of the price increases are covered by government subsidies.
I will be really interested to see how it all shakes out in the end. I know that our individual policies here were already in line with the ACA, and priced appropriately, so very few of our members had to change policies or saw any kind of price increase. I heard through the grapevine here at the office that BCBS intentionally inflated their prices and changed their individual policies this fall in order to blame it on ACA. That seems like mostly what's happened rather than that the ACA actually caused any major price increases.
What's BCBS?
Don't you have to meet income requirements to get the subsidies?
OK, I don't see how Meri's grapevine makes any sense.

People assumed that prices would increase / don't fully know too much about ACA, so played into bias and or confusion? I don't really know just brainstorming.

Yeah, more or less. That's what the Higher Ups here are saying, anyway. They are, of course, biased against BCBS, so I take it all with a grain of salt.
(BCBS = Blue Cross Blue Shield)

I think the assumption is that they weren't offering non-profitable plans at all. Rather, they figured that with all of the confusion surrounding the ACA - and the assumption that prices would go up because of it and so BCBS could blame the ACA for the price inflation - BCBS can now make more money on plans that were only slightly changed without suffering any hits to their reputation by saying, "Blame the ACA!"
That seems to ignore the entire logic of Obamaexchanges, which is that insurance providers will be competing with each other for customers.
I mean, why would a prospective customer care whether a given provider is raising prices for this reason or another? Surely they would just look at their price vs. their competitors' prices.

I don't know. I mean how many people who already have healthcare plans that aren't going away, are actively going and looking if they can get a better deal on the exchange?

True dat.
I suppose that there's hope that things will eventually go in that direction, but I think that right now, people are more afraid of all of the changes that are going on than they are looking for a good deal. They're going to stick with what they know until things settle down.
I have no idea. I can honestly say that I despise trying to figure out what's covered by how much when working through my health insurance plan. It's a maze of confusion, and I work in the industry. If I had the opportunity to stick with what I have or go on the Exchange, I don't know that I'd bother. (As it is, self-funded companies don't have to open to the Exchanges, so it's kind of moot.)
I think you're overstating the case Meri. Obamaexchanges are specficially designed to make price shopping as easy as possible, by offering only four flavors of coverage/deductible combination.

Yep. I'll be interesting to see if it works especially because the unique characteristic of US healthcare is that it's generally been provided by employers, so a lot of the things people will be weighing up aren't things they've necessarily thought about before.
But people aren't necessarily sensible consumers. In the UK for example customers are very reluctant to change banks or utility supplier, for all sorts of reasons. It wouldn't surprise me if health insurance was similar. Even if it looks like there's a cheaper/better deal people may stick just because they're worried about the small print, aren't sure they really know what the other provider's offering and it's better the devil you know.
There are examples of countries with private healthcare and similar exchange style systems who have seen prices drop due to competition (combined with government cost control). But my understanding is that in European countries with universal private insurance it's always been the individual who had to buy insurance, so they've always been the consumer and understand the product perhaps a bit more than Americans?
