Last night, in a piece about the upcoming democratic convention, one of our local news anchors referred to Philadelphia as "The birthplace of democracy."
In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock

Well the Romans claimed they invented it exactly one year before Athens but I always found that unlikely.

There are some examples of proto-democracies that existed before the Greek city-states, but most people call Athens the birthplace of democracy.  Regardless, democracy had existed long before the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia.
