It's wrong for the same reason any deviation from sports jargon is wrong.  Calling a soccer goalie a "hands using guy" wouldn't be techically inaccurate, but people would know instantaneously you don't follow the game.

I see.  But not following basketball should be no big deal?  Maybe his favourite sports is baseball or whatever.
