I was talking about the source books, not the novels.  :yuk:

I read the source books for entertainment. And wonder what people was on when they wrote them.
I can accept that.  I love reading sourcebooks.  But I hate Victor more than any real-life political figure.
I do not hate you, nor do I love you, but you are made out of atoms which I can use for something else.

Copyright infringement.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Yeah, I admit, it's my weakness as well. (sourcebooks, not Victor a character I know nothing about).

For more fun genocide, the Battletech Jihad books are amusing. If you can stand the writing style.

Writer 1: I LIKE NUKES
Writer 2: I LIKE POISON GAS
Battletech books were fucking awful.

Victor Steiner-Davion can fucking die.

I thought "Heir to the Dragon" was really good.  Everything else is mostly schlock.

And yes, Victor is the Wesley Crusher of the Battletech universe.  Must die in a fire.

He got Jap strange. OMG SPOILER.

Anyways, speaking of BT, their forums are funny as balls. People analyze each new release and get awfully angry if their widdle faction gets hosed. The angry Capellan fan is especially hilarious.

Except for FWL fans, because we got hosed on every release and so didn't expect anything else.

I went through a Kurita phase (oooh dragons!), then had a soft spot for the FWL (well, they could be the closest thing to a democracy among all these pompous tyrants), and then a Periphery-tard (Taurian Concordant FTW!)

I went from being a Steiner apologist to a Periphery-Tard.

I always pegged you for a Magistracy of Canopus hedonist.  :P

40k is so dark as to be almost ridiculous.  Out of all the peoples of the universe, only the Eldar aren't morally abhorrent.  The Tau and the Empire are space Nazis, the Tyrannids are evil from beyond space, the Orks are murderous barbarians, everyone related to Chaos is actively engaged in the gleeful commission of attrocities and the Necrons went from being tragic ancient monsters deceived by evil gods to being retarded mummies in space.

You can't really compare it to Traveller though, as Traveller occasionally has events and a narrative, like the Rebellion.  In 40k, nothing changes and the whole universe is just a prop to sell models and fight battles with miniatures.  Totally different animals.

As for the Virus, I felt that it was Traveller changing with the times.  The older school sci-fi of adventuring within a great space empire doesn't really fit with a lot of people these days who don't have experience with stuff from the 60s and 70s.
The joys of the Horus Heresy for the Warhammer 40k setting.  Humanity is still relatively "good" and there's some hope for a better future.  Then... boom.  Fun to watch it all go to shit though.
"Everything that brought you here -- all the things that made you a prisoner of past sins -- they are gone. Forever and for good. So let the past go... and live."

"Somebody, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others. They just don't dare express themselves as we did."

In the Future there is only War, and there is a Hot Topic on every corner.

I can see where people pooh-pooh the WH40K setting as adolescent horror porn, but the fact that there is absolutely no redeeming qualities in human existence is exactly what makes it so compelling.  It's the ultimate Hobbesian universe, with a splash of the most insane medievalism.
Technology misunderstood to the point that it's treated as religious relic, ships so ancient they require thousands of poor souls to run them, the depravity of the human existence is matched only by the horrors of the universe it faces, where FTL travel runs the risk of tearing open the Warp and the unconscionable evils within it.

It ain't for your average Lawful Good Paladin, I'll say that.

Amen, bro.  Misfits tees for all.

I kinda get the impression that's it's an over the top parody of Gothic themes and tropes.  Which is what Warhammer the fantasy game was.  Then they put it in space, to make it even more over the top.

:yeahright:

The Tau are more like space communists, and I find them the least evil (though they would rate quite high on the evil meter in real life).
It is far better for the truth to tear my flesh to pieces, then for my soul to wander through darkness in eternal damnation.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.
