Notwithstanding that, I still maintain that as a species we have simply transcended biology - we are now running our own evolution that is much faster (and thus much more relevant) than natural selection. Plus, at least in the West, we have developed elaborate systems of law, medicine, technology, finance (pension schemes etc.) etc., which no longer forces old people to rely on the support of their descendants to survive.

Ergo: reproduction on a species/culture level remains necessary, but on an individual level is no longer relevant.

Human evolution has speed up over the last 10,000 years. :contract:
That's not true, at least not in genetic sense. It has been replaced by change induced because of culture and human-created environment (which is part of culture).

You're simply wrong.

It is far better for the truth to tear my flesh to pieces, then for my soul to wander through darkness in eternal damnation.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

The point is to have someone to take care of you. If you have zero children, there is zero chance of this.

I'd rather have a paid nurse.

That's fortunate.  :)

I'm never having babies, thank you very much.  -_-
You'll change your mind once you hit 30.

Not necessarily.

My cat just had kittens! I'm not really sure what to do now.  :Embarrass:

But they're so cute!

Can I use a few?

If that is all they require then yes.  I do not think your Grandfather wants or needs 9 caretakers.

How do you figure that? That's 8 children who don't really benefit him.

You have to think in terms of civilization.
At this rate, the world is going to be muslim within a century.

The underlying thesis is that smart people don't reproduce, whereas dumbasses reproduce like rabbits.
Surely this isn't an original idea.  I came up with this twenty years ago.

Even if that is the case, so what?

Does that means that I am smart?

No.  But it doesn't mean that you're stupid either.

Gene pools to big for really big strides in evolution. Any large change, advantageous or otherwise, gets watched out in the see of alleles.

It's not a new idea, Idiocracy is just a particularly good articulation of it.
