I've never really got ice cubes in anything. I certainly wouldn't put them in wine.

Most of the time they're used for poor people drinks like soda or shitty beer.  The colder the drink is, the harder it is to taste any shitty aftertastes, which poor people drinks often feature.

Yes there is a place for ice in some drinks.  Watering down a glass of red wine is not one of them.  Unless I suppose the wine in question is complete crap and you need to mask the taste in some way as Cal has suggested.
