So are Frosthaven, et al addons or expansions to Gloomhaven that are integrated with it or completely separate games?

- Forgotten Circles is an addon to the base game, and extra short campaign to play after the main one, with one extra class.
- Jaws of the Lion is a standalone game, it's a short campaign with four classes.
- Frosthaven is a  big box standalone game, same scope as the original Gloomhaven.

You can use the classes, etc... from Jaws in the main game. Frosthaven technically you can - mechanics are the same -  but the developer doesn't recommend it since he changed the design philosophy - now he's gone back and is releasing a new edition of Gloomhaven to reflect these new ideas.

There is a Gloomhaven 2nd edition coming out soon, the biggest change is that they redid a lot of the characters, since some didn't work as well (especially when compared to the later designs). Really great game. There is also a Gloomhaven RPG being released soon.
