Quote from: Darth Wagtaros on January 03, 2025, 11:08:45 AMSo are Frosthaven, et al addons or expansions to Gloomhaven that are integrated with it or completely separate games?

- Forgotten Circles is an addon to the base game, and extra short campaign to play after the main one, with one extra class.
- Jaws of the Lion is a standalone game, it's a short campaign with four classes.
- Frosthaven is a  big box standalone game, same scope as the original Gloomhaven.

You can use the classes, etc... from Jaws in the main game. Frosthaven technically you can - mechanics are the same -  but the developer doesn't recommend it since he changed the design philosophy - now he's gone back and is releasing a new edition of Gloomhaven to reflect these new ideas.

There is a Gloomhaven 2nd edition coming out soon, the biggest change is that they redid a lot of the characters, since some didn't work as well (especially when compared to the later designs). Really great game. There is also a Gloomhaven RPG being released soon.

Hey, what was the name of that space-race themed game we tried to run on Discord years ago? I'm on a space lark these days and the little we managed to play I quite loved it. I may try to find a copy.

Thanks! I'll comb my local stores to see if I'm lucky. Buying direct has pretty steep shipping.

Check BGG as well.

Located a few stores that carry it over here (according to their digital storefronts at least). I'll nab it next time I head downtown :)

I've gotten back into Battletech after years and years of not playing it.  A large number of people who have been doing the Warhammer thing have taken up the hobby and found it to be much more affordable compared to what they're used to.
I do not hate you, nor do I love you, but you are made out of atoms which I can use for something else.

I'd never really considered BattleTech and Warhammer as being comparable.

I mean obviously they are - they both involve miniatures.

I just hadn't considered it before.

What era BattleTech is the new hotness these days?

I've been playing in 3025 games, but they're launching a new era for the 3150s, where the amount of options and gadgets is off the wall and the Wolf Clan has conquered Terra.  From what I've seen though, the eras that would be familiar to those of us who were into it in the Nineties are still the most popular.

They have some alternative rulesets that dispense with the hex-maps and simplify the record sheets to the point where it's closer to something in the Warhammer space.  Myself, I prefer the classic experience.

Yeah - I get why FASA would update the setting - you gotta sell more games! - but the classic setting made the most sense.

I'm curious - to what extent has 3d printing disrupted the whole miniatures world?

It's Catalyst now, although a couple of the old FASA guys are still involved.

Different game communities have different tolerances for 3D printing.  Battletech seems to be pretty accepting, and the company seems willing to live and let live, but I know a lot of 40k people are deadset against it.  Games Workshop is vehemently against it, but part of it might be that Battletech's price point is much more reasonable.  $5 for a high-quality miniature is money that people are willing to spend, whereas at ~$30 people look for alternatives.

Sorry - more meant why FASA updated the setting back in the day.  I didn't know who owned BatteTech now, but knew FASA wasn't around any longer.
