Why be enraged about those 51st State comments if you are going to behave as if it's already a reality?

You know as well as I do that Canadians don't watch their tv.  CTV and Global only stream American shows, or some Canadian equivalents of American reality shows and CBC must be 50% American content, more if you exclude the news.

It's almost as if if they are a people with no history, and no culture...

Quote from: crazy canuck on February 26, 2025, 01:27:54 PMWhat a joke the Americans have become.  The "threat" of tariffs moved back another month.

Meanwhile the damage is done, everyone is finding ways to do without them.  For some industries, like oil and gas, it will take longer.  But almost certainly the pipeline East project will now go ahead, and once a new Liberal leader is elected the Western Pipelines will be back on the table.

Trump has been very good for Canadian oil and gas.  In time we won't be tied to the discounts we were obliged to give to the Americans.

Latest update has Trump imposing tariffs on march 4, because "drugs are still flowing across the border."

Yeah, saw that.

Might be better if he just does it. The pain in the US will be felt more rapidly, and we can get on with the business of disentangling our ties with the United States as much as possible.

That might trigger a big defeat in the midterms for the Trumpists.  If the Congress matters at that point.

In several surveys, the overwhelming first choice for what makes Canada unique is multiculturalism. This, in a world collapsing into stupid, impoverishing hatreds, is the distinctly Canadian national project.

Largest turnaround in Canadian history says the reports I am reading.

Copying Trumpist rhetoric turned out to be unpopular for the Conservatives.  Who would have guessed eh BB?

It's pretty wild to see, though we'll see how long it lasts.

It is instructive, I think, to compare Poilievre's handling of the situation to Ford's. Ford managed to position himself on the Canadian side of things and has suffered much less - in spite of generally being fairly Trump aligned.

You make a good point.  It will be interesting to see if Poilievre adopts more of Ford's style.  Or if he is even able to play that sort of role.  Throughout his career he has been an attack dog, and that is what made his adoption of Trumpist lines work for him.

Can he change? His future as a politician may depend on it.

It annoys me when foreign celebrities come out in a big partisan way in Unites States electoral politics (not issues like save the whales or whatever). Even if I agree with their position, it is just kind of rude. But it really really annoys me when they come out for Donald Trump.

So Wayne Gretzky get shit on for his Trump dick sucking made me happy. So thanks for that Canada.

Yeah, but it would not have been as bad if he wasn't such a shit at the four nations cup.

Corrupt protected land dealings aside, Fords been pretty decent as a premier. You know,  as far as conservatives leadership goes... Going into the Covid era I was concerned he'd fuck up, but he didn't. So there you go. Ford for PM I guess

A kind of same thing has happened in Montreal too. No one is buying new Condos. A builder was quoted saying that his biggest competition is himself 2 years ago.
