The Israel situation angered up Vipers blood. I was more joking about my ongoing ribbing him about becoming a liberal :D
Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".
Hubris must be punished. Severely.

Fair enough.  It's like reading posts from an Arab version of Siegebreaker.  But I repeat myself.

Quote from: Barrister on February 14, 2025, 06:04:07 PMPersonally, I blame Obama.

:P

I mean obviously not - Trump is responsible for his own bad actions - but this notion of doing matters by Executive Order has been increasing for a long time.  For Obama we saw it in the steps he took for the so-called DREAMers, or for Biden in student debt releif.

We're seeing it in Canada too - with Trudeau seeing no problem in proroguing Parliament but also announcing a number of responses to Trump, and with Carney indicating he'll use several emergency powers to respond to Trump if he's elected Liberal leader.

None of which means Trump escapes blame - but this centralization in the leader's office has grown as the entire apparatus of the state has grown.  Not sure how though you reverse it.
More than Obama - but I have thought before that if you build an imperial presidency it feels like you do risk an emperor.

I think the US-Canada causes and issue are different on my reading. In the US first Congress and Presidents built a powerful administrative state to deal with the 20th century, as legislation through Congress became more difficult Presidents have leveraged their executive/administrative powers more and the politics of the judiciary has become even more nakedly important.

With Canada it's just that you apparently have a norm that internal party elections/political ends are sufficient to suspend parliament meaning it can't fulfill its constitutional role (as I say I find it mad that parliament isn't sitting given what's going on with Trump).

The funny thing is that his entire response is sort of a non-response.  It's pretty clear from the context of Beeb's post that it's not the number of executive orders that are the problem, but rather their use for things that should be handled within the legislative sphere.

I know I haven't seen most of you in a decade, but some of the changes in people are kind of jarring.  Viper is weirdly aggressive, all the time.  It's like Money's old schtick, but not as charming.
I was just teasing BB.  I didn't want to be rude or aggressive, but I realize I was. Sorry.

I still agree with many things he says and I appreciate him a lot.

I don't see eye to eye with him on PP, mostly.

Fair enough.  I suppose I'm just out of the in-jokes.

Cannot happen for another three months.

Quote from: Jacob on February 14, 2025, 07:09:48 PMIt's the usual "when you do it, it's wrong; when we do it - even if we do it more - it's fine."

Well, one side is responsibly doing what's necessary and the other is blatantly abusing their illegitimate power. :P
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

Well, if you look at the proposed Carney's agenda, it's exactly the same thing Stephen Harper introduced...

The last time, some people were all riled up about it, cutting taxes for the rich (the middle class ends at 178k$ in Quebec; Legault cut taxes for people making up to 100k$ and was accused of slashing taxes for the rich, I can't wait to see the Liberals do it :) ), removing the carbon tax (does not affect Quebec), dropping the corporate tax rate...

I don't know who's coming along nicely? :P

That being said, both of my choices are horrible.  And I refuse to vote for a populist.
