The only NG movie I saw was The Borg Kick Our Asses, which was OK.

I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

I would kill myself if my head bobbed uncontrollably like that too.

Everyone dislikes Search For Spock.  I don't get it.  It's got:

1)The best acting moment (Kirk learning of David's death);
2)The best caper sequence (stealing the Enterprise);
3)The second best victory snatched from the jaws of defeat ("GET OUT OF THERE!"
4)The third best villain (after Khan and Chang)
5)An exploding planet!
6)The teariest scene in all six movies (you know what it is)
7)The second most effective space battle (after TUC, although ymmv)
8)James Horner's score and
9)Proof that these mighty starships can basically be run by two to six personnel, which I always suspected.

Nimoy's also has a better eye for constructing a scene than he's usually given credit for, although in fairness I guess I'm comparing him to Shatner and Frakes.

Of course, SFS earns demerits for half-stomping on Spock's sacrifice (albeit in the most ginger and respectful conceivable way), failing to secure Kirstie Alley, the oddment that the Genesis Planet quarantine is enforced by the honor system, and "oh, did we never mention that 'katra' stuff to the ten million cultural anthropologists that visited Vulcan, translated our books, and hung out with us for decades? sorry" nonsense that gets the plot rolling.  But you can make similar nitpicks about your beloved TWOK, and otherwise SFS is just so great.

SFS sucks.

QuoteThe Search for Spock 's plot solicited comment; Schickel called the film "overplotted" and filled with "heavy expository burdens", comparing it to real opera. Sterritt said that the script occasionally veered in "arbitrary" directions and contained missteps, such as how the Grissom and its crew are suddenly lost, but the plot disregards their fate. Arnold wrote that Shatner missed an opportunity to act on par with The Wrath of Khan 's revelation that Kirk was David's father. The critic considered David's death an attempt at a similar shock, but felt it was not a success. Harry M. Geduld, writing for The Humanist, criticized the film for what he called "contradictions and implausibilities", such as Scott's sabotage of the Excelsior and Spock's regeneration.

I concur

The "full of implausibilities" part is funny, but I don't even understand the "plot disregards [the Grissom crew's fate]."  They're charged particles in orbit around Genesis.  What's there to regard?

That from a professional reviewer.

I'm sure they must have arrived at it by objective and scientifically rigorous means, then.

PS, is there a reason you have to say I'm not a professional film critic?  Is that, like, news to anybody?

50 other people on this board and they all have their own opinions and bullshit hobbies, and I am constantly torn down by a few of you because I indulge in mine.  Disagree, fine, even ill-manners is fine, but this contempt is getting old.  It's shitty and the lot of you need to knock it off, unless you're the genuinely nasty people I think some of you are who do it just to insult me because you 1)hate me because I have differing politics and 2)believe you can hurt my feelings and think that would be fun.

SFS sucks, but had some nice moments:

1) McCoy looking for a hotshot, rogue starship pilot at the Mos Eisley Cantina.
2) Savak's intergalactic handjob of mercy.  If only we all got one while racing through puberty.
3) Christopher Lloyd commanding a starship the way I would.

Other than that, it's a real steamer.

With 95% casualty rates?

FWIW, I agree with you that TSFS is under-rated, but I certainly wouldn't rate it the best movie in the franchise, either.  Just sticking to the films that focus on the original crew, I'd go:

1 TWOK
2 TVH
3 TSFS
4 TMP
5 TUC
6 TFF

Generations doesn't focus on the original crew;  it's a TNG movie with Kirk in a supporting role and Scotty and Chekov in what amount to extended cameos. I'd rate it as slightly better than TUC, but really the only TNG movie worth bothering with is First Contact, which I'd say is better than TMP but not as good as TSFS.

That "real-life" events comment probably means the historic events depicted in the series like Reagan's assassination attempt or the SDI. But I really wonder how realistic is the show, regarding what we know of KGB's operations within the US at the time.
And yeah, Stan's character feels more forced than the others, but Emmerich pulls it off, imho.

We will probably never know that. However it is not a new concept....see Telefon(1977) w/ Chuck Bronson and Lee
Remick.

Hey Nancy, relax, quit being over sensitive. I agree more than disagree and like your reviews. You at Languish not Pdox, you need to have your big boy pants on. Or any pants for that matter.  :P
